New Public Garden to Add Splash of Colour for Enniscrone
Enniscrone’s Castlefield Park has a new garden feature to add even more enjoyment to the pleasant public amenity. The garden project is being overseen by the Enniscrone Men’s Shed Association.
Members of the community group have begun laying out the boundaries of the garden which is situated on the west flank of the Castlefield.
Castlefield Park in the seaside village is a renowned heritage site with its neolithic tomb remains, ancient ring fort, and a 14th century castle overlooking the area. The location is also undergoing construction for a sports and running track. In addition, the park is to have a new garden feature to further enhance the public space.
Now that the boundaries have been set, the ground will soon be prepared for planting in the Spring. The plan is to cultivate wild flowers and create a sitting area for the public.
Gregory O’Brien, the chairman of Enniscrone Men’s Shed, explains that the new facility will grow wild flowers and shrubs to add a splash of colour to the public space. He says there are multiple benefits from the project. One purpose is get the community involved in gardening. Members of the public are welcome to participate with the Men’s Shed in cultivating and maintaining the area.
“The shared activity will be great for community wellbeing,” said Mr O’Brien.
Another benefit is to give a boost to biodiversity and raise environmental awareness. The wildflowers will attract bees and other pollinating insects to the area. The garden will also be used to grow vegetables and fruits with the installation of polytunnels.
The project has been enabled by Enniscrone and District Council which offered the plot to the local Men’s Shed Association.
