Local Notes: Enniscrone Clean Coast Group win Ocean Hero Awards Group of the Year 2024.

Enniscrone Clean Coasts Group who were joint winners of the Group of the Year at the 2024 Ocean Hero Awards which was held on Wednesday, November 27 at the gibson Hotel, Dublin.

Clean Coasts 2024 Ocean Hero Award winners

Two nominations and one win for Enniscrone Clean Coasts Groups at the 2024 Ocean Hero Awards in Group of the Year and Individual of the Year categories.  An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme celebrated Enniscrone Clean Coasts Group and group member Michael Breen who made a difference for marine environment this year with honours in 2 categories at the 2024 Ocean Hero Awards. An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme hosted the Ocean Hero Awards Ceremony at the Gibson Hotel, Dublin, on Wednesday, November 27, to celebrate and give thanks to the dedicated groups, individuals, communities, and businesses who have gone above and beyond to protect their local coastline and its surrounding environment, in 2024.

Enniscrone Clean Coasts is part of Enniscrone Tidy Towns and they were nominated in the 2024 Group of the Year category. 2024 has been a great year getting for the committee with their Blue Flag reinstated and their Green Flag also. As well as participating in the Clean Coasts Big Beach Clean, the group enlisted the help of various local sports clubs, social and ethnic groups to come out for beach cleans every Sunday morning from June through to September. With people of all ages taking part, their goal is to help keep beaches clean and to instil a more widespread awareness of the need to care for the beach environment. To inform the public of the local biodiversity the group also installed a number of nature panels displayed along the promenade depicting the many birds, insects, mammals and plants dependent on the natural beach habitats.

Michael Breen was nominated in the Individual of the Year category for his work as one of the main drivers of the Clean Coasts Group in Enniscrone. He works tirelessly for the group to improve both the built and natural heritage of the area. He has spoken many times at Clean Coasts events and is always very obliging when asked. He has also worked with Sligo County Council on dune conservation and has collaborated on a variety of initiatives engaging with local groups in the area, such as working with local artists groups on promoting the coasts through their work. He has encouraged and has engaged local sports clubs, businesses, social groups and organisations to take part in beach cleans and to instil a more widespread awareness of the need to care for our local beach and surrounding environment.

Soroptimists Public Speaking

Well done to Roise Egan, Belle Lynott, Anna Feeney and Ella Winters from Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, who had a fantastic evening at the Public Speaking Soroptimist competition, which was held in Ballina recently. The girls spoke with courage and conviction, making everyone at the school incredibly proud. This competition enriches girls’ self-esteem, confidence and self-regard. The school also thanked Ms McLoughlin for preparing the girls so well.

CCE Christmas Concert

The annual CCE Christmas Concert will take place on Saturday, December 7, at 7.30pm, in Dromore West Community Centre, in what promises to be an entertaining evening filled with lots of music, song and dance. All tickets will be entered into a draw for a hamper door prize. There will be refreshments and raffle on the night and admission is €10 and children are free.

Enniscrone Church restoration

Remedial works to the exterior flat roofed front section of Enniscrone Church, which was leaking in a number of locations has been completed. This roof is now fully insulated with an asphalt finish to provide a water-tight membrane. Work on the interior roof of this section will be completed in January 2025.

Thanks has been extended Boz Kilcullen Construction for the quality of the work completed and to all who contribute to the second collection at weekend Masses which helps to cover the cost of this work.

Christmas Carol Service

The annual Christmas Carol Service will be held in Enniscrone Church on Sunday, December 15, at 5pm.

Blotto

The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football club blotto draw which was held on Sunday, November 24, were 24, 36 and 44. The €25 prizewinners were Anne Devaney, Hannah O’Brien, Vincent Feeney and Conor McGuinness. The jackpot in the latest draw held on Sunday, December 1, which was held in McNulty’s Bar was €9800.

Advent Prayer Service

An Advent Prayer Service will take place this evening Tuesday, December 3 and Tuesday, December 10, at 7pm in the Church of Our :Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone. It will be facilitated by the Lay Leadership Team. Everyone is welcome.

Indoor coaching programme

Enniscrone Kilglass GAA club commenced an indoor coaching programme on Friday evenings at the Astro Turf at Quigabar and it will continue for another three weeks. U9’s from 6-7pm, U11’s from 7-8pm and U13’s from 8-9pm.

Boxes of collection envelopes

The boxes of collection envelopes for 2025 for Enniscrone Church will soon be distributed to households. If anyone would like to receive a box of collection envelopes or a box of the present restoration envelopes which run until the end of May 2025, contact kilglass-enniscrone@killaladiocese.org.

Enniscrone Church Parish Shop

The parish shop in Enniscrone church is open each weekend. On Fridays from 12 noon to 4pm; Saturdays 12 noon to 6pm and other times on request. They have a large range of grave lights, November candles, prayer cards, books, statues etc. People are welcome to call in to browse and all money raised in the shop goes to the church. Christmas Lights Switch On

Eaksey Enhancement Association invite all to join them for an evening of Christmas celebration and fun on Saturday, December 7 at 5pm. The meeting place is at the Village Grotto car park where there will be Christmas Carols, Santa’s Grotto and the switch on of the Christmas lights.

Craft and Cake Sale

The Wavy Crafters, Easkey, are holding a craft and cake sale on Sunday, December 8, after Mass (10.45) in the parish meeting room at Stepping Stones. Tea and coffee will be available on the day, with all proceeds towards Easkey Enhancement Association (EEA).

Indoor Food and Craft Market

The Indoor Food and Craft Market is held in the Old Church, Main Street, Enniscrone, every Saturday from 11am to 3pm, featuring a wide range of handmade gifts, jewellery, paintings, plants and flowers, home baking, vegetables, fresh fish, bric a brac and local crafts. Please go along and enjoy a coffee and some home baking.

Bingo

Enniscrone Bingo celebrated its one year in operation on Tuesday evening last, November 26, at 8pm in the Old Church, Enniscrone, with lots of refreshments and prizes. The have come a long way from when they first opened their doors and they still have more to do. Thanks has been extended to all the volunteers who help out every week especially to all the players who come every week and to all the new players.

Bingo takes place every Tuesday at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm. There is always free tea and coffee on offer. All are welcome to come along and support, and be in with a chance to win. All money raised goes to Western Gaels.

Castleconnor First Responders

The Castleconnor First Responser Group is raising funds to purchase additional defibrillators and training equipment, ensuring volunteers are ready for incidents such as chest pains, strokes, and cardiac arrests within the community.

Upon receiving a call, the National Ambulance Service will immediately notify the First Responders, who will provide crucial support, CPR, and defibrillation as needed until the ambulance arrives. Men on the Move

The 8 week Men on the Move fitness class programme is back at Castleconnor Community Centre on Wednesday evenings from 8-9pm and it will continue until December 11 and then from January 8 to 29. The cost of the eight week programme is €40 and it is partly funded by SSRP. This fitness class is suitable for all abilities, it will increase energy levels, you can take some time for yourself and have the craic. Contact Bernie on 087 6164788 for further details.

Jingle and Mingle

Castleconnor Community Council are hosting their annual Christmas Party fundraiser on Sunday, December 22, from 11am to 2pm at Castleconnor Community Centre. This is a wonderful festive event that brings the whole community together while raising funds for the day to day running of the community centre. There will be a cake sale, raffles, music, face-painting, complimentary food and drink and you can also meet Santa.

Your support for this event will be appreciated and ‘Jingle and Mingle’ with family, neighbours and friends while supporting a great cause.

GAA lotto

The numbers drawn in the Castleconnor GAA weekly lotto which was held on Saturday, November 23, were 4, 7, 18 and 36. There was no jackpot winner. Match 3 winner of €100 was Sean McGuire, and the lucky dip winner of €50 was Josie Cawley. The jackpot in the latest draw which was held on November 30, was €24,400.
