The late Canon George McHale

The death took place of Canon George McHale, Rathnamagh, Crossmolina and former parish priest of Kilglass Parish, Enniscrone, peacefully at Ard na Greine Nursing Home, Enniscrone, on August 11.

Canon George was predeceased by his parents Michael and Delia McHale, sister June Thurlow, brother Tommy and brother-in-law John Thurlow. He was the beloved brother of Francie (Rathnamagh), sisters-in-law Kathleen and Winnie, nephews, nieces, Archbishop Francis, and Bishop John, brother Priests of Killala Diocese, relatives, parishioners and many friends.

Canon George reposed at the Church of the Holy Family, Kilglass, Co Sligo on Thursday, August 13, from 5 until 8pm and his Requiem Mass was held on Friday, August 14, at 12 noon followed by burial in St Tiernan’s Cemetery, Crossmolina. May he rest in peace.

Heritage Week continues

There are a number of events being held in the Enniscrone and Kilglass area to celebrate National Heritage Week which commenced on August 15 and continues until August 23.

On Sunday, August 16, Picks of the Past – photos of bygone days and a display of old vehicles and machinery was held at Kilglass Parish Community Centre. Tomorrow Wednesday, August 19, a guided tour of Enniscrone Castle Field with its megalithic tombs, ringforts, castle and Valentine’s Church will take place from 7 to 8pm; Thursday, August 20, a guided Bat tour of Kilglass House will be held from 9 to 11.30pm; Saturday, August 22, Back to Our Roots, exploring plant traditions at Kiglass House from 2 to 5pm. There will also be a guided tour of archaeological sites along the Aughris Head Coastal Walk on Friday, August 21 from 7 to 8.30pm.

The O’Dubhda Challenge

The O’Dubhda Challenge returns for its 11th edition on Sunday, October 4, bringing runners to Enniscrone for one of Ireland’s most scenic race days.

Take on the 10k, half marathon or 20 miles along the Wild Atlantic Way, the perfect distances to sharpen your preparation for the Irish Life Dublin Marathon. Whether you are locking in race pace or getting that final long run done, this event fits seamlessly into your autumn build-up.

This event is organised by West Sligo Athletics Club and proudly sponsored by Anam Pharmacy with digital support from U Marketing Labs. Every entry helps fund the development of the new Enniscrone Athletics Track, supporting athletics in the community.

The late Patrick (PJ) Wallace

The death took place on Monday, July 20, of Patrick (PJ) Wallace 66, London and Enniscrone, Co Sligo peacefully after a short illness. He was predeceased by his mother Margaret Wallace (nee Grimes) of Muckduff, Enniscrone and his father Bill Wallace, Limerick, his aunts Clair Mullaney (Quigaboy, Enniscrone), and Madeline Tuffy (Muckduff, Enniscrone).

PJ will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his sisters Joanne and Maddie, cherished nephew Connor, brothers-in-law Gary and Russ, aunts Trish Beglin (Culleens), Mary Donoghue and Breedge McGorman (London) and his extended family and friends.

PJ’s funeral arrived to the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone, on Monday, August 10, for Requiem Mass at 12 noon followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass. May PJs gentle soul rest in peace.

Outstanding achievements at Enniscrone Golf Club

Enniscrone Golf Club captains Arachie and Antoinette, have taken some time to celebrate the outstanding achievements by some of their golfers throughout the year. At senior level, they were delighted to have two representatives on provincial teams, with Sophie Dodd and David Shiel, both lining out in the colours of Connacht with both enjoying very successful campaigns. Sophie went on the win the Ladies Irish Close Plate at Enniscrone last month, which was a magnificent reward for her hard work and dedication.

The club acknowledge Darragh McGrath, who has achieved an outstanding accolade by winning two World Amateur Golf Ranking events recently at Dungannon and Tulfarris. He also had a third place finish at Knightsbrook. The WAGR events are recognised for Elite Amateur golfers and this highlights the significance of Darragh’s achievements. Darragh also found time to return home to Enniscrone and compete and win the Senior Scratch Cup. Darragh is wished every success with his golfing scholarship in America. The club will be following his progress with great interest.

At junior level, Junior Convenor Eddie Forde with huge help from Robert Jacob and Joe Forde and a dedicated team of volunteers arrange weekly competitions, coaching and development of the junior boys and girls. The fruits of this hard work and dedication have been evident throughout the year, culminating in three of the young golfers representing Connacht. Ruairi Freeman and Tom Horkan represented the Connacht U16 team, while Alex Cooke represented the U14 team.

Special mention goes to Alex Cooke for his outstanding achievement in winning the Irish Boys Amateur Open U14 Championship. The club are extremely proud of them all.

Captains Archie and Antoinette congratulated all golfers, both senior and junior, on their achievements throughout the year. Their success is a wonderful reflection of the talent, commitment and hard work within the club and they look forward to even more success in the years ahead.

Blotto

The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs blotto draw held on Sunday, August 9, were 21, 26 and 36. There was no jackpot winner and the €25 prizewinners were John Kildea, Vincent Feeney, Susan and John, Max and Laoise Gordon. The jackpot in the latest draw held on Sunday, August 16, in Gilroy’s Bar, was €4600.

The annual general meeting of the Tireragh Community Support Ltd will be held today, Tuesday, August 18, at 12 noon in The Coach House, Kilglass.

‘Getting Back to Our Roots’ workshop

Journey back in time to explore plant traditions with palaeoecologist Dr Carla Sa Ferreira, at Kilglass House for a free workshop ‘Getting Back To Our Roots’, on Saturday, August 22, from 2-5pm. The workshop will comprise of a foraging walk in Kilglass House Woodland, learn about traditional herbal remedies, identify edible plants, learn about plant traditions – uses of plants and folklore. Refreshments will be served made from foraged edible plants, and there will be natural tea making (bring your own mug). Booking is essential by texting 083 4461322.

Indoor Market at the Old Church

Enniscrone Indoor Market held in The Old Church, Main Street is open from 11am to 3pm every Saturday. Come along and have a look at all the stalls and chat with the wonderful traders. There is fresh vegetables and fruit, oil paintings, crochet, wooden bowls, handmade jewellery, healthy products, personalised frames and cards, gift ideas and much more. Meet up with friends or family and visit the café, which has a breakfast and lunch menu available. It is open every day from 9am to 4pm.

Easkey and Eoghan Rua lotto

The numbers drawn in the Easkey and Eoghan Rua weekly lotto which was held on August 9, were 5, 21, 28 and 31. There was no jackpot winner and the consolation prizewinners were Fr Kieran Holmes, Michael McHugh, Rachel Burke, Dan and Maggie c/o Harbour Bar, and Sinead McGinty. The jackpot in the latest draw held on August 16, was €6100.

Duck Race in Easkey

The Easkey St Farnan’s Hurling Club are holding a duck race on Sunday, September 6, at Easkey River Bridge. This promised to be a fun event for all the family. Lines are on sale in local shops in Easkey and Dromore West and from hurlers. The time of the duck race is to be announced, but it won’t be the quack of dawn!

Men’s Yoga in Dromore West

Thinking of giving yoga a go? This class is a great place to start with no pressure, no experience needed, just come along, have a stretch and see how you get on. Join Ellie May Yoga for a relaxed 4 week Men’s Yoga block in Dromore West Community Centre on Thursday evenings from 7-8pm. The cost is €5 per person, per session and it is payable on the night.

Yoga can help improve flexibility, ease aches and pains, build strength, reduce stress and leave you feeling better both physically and mentally. Meals on Wheels volunteers

Easkey Meals on Wheels are looking for volunteer weekend drivers for the Enniscrone area. Volunteers would need to be available between 11.45am and 1.30pm on a Saturday or Sunday once a month. They would need a full, clean driving licence, and would need to be willing to complete a Garda vetting form. Dromore West Bingo

Bingo is back in Dromore West on Friday nights at 8.30pm in the community centre. There will be a jackpot of €700 with extra prizes in their raffle and a 50/50 draw. All proceeds from the raffle and 50/50 draw goes to St Farnan’s Gaelic for Mothers and Others.

GAA lotto

The numbers drawn in the Castleconnor GAA weekly lotto which was held on August 8 last were 1, 9, 29 and 30. There was no jackpot winner and the match 3 winners were Edana Barrett and Mark Geraghty. The lucky dip winner was Castleconnor Community Council. The jackpot in the lastest draw which was held on August 15, was €10,900.
