Fond memories of the late Francis Rutledge

Fond memories were recalled and many tributes paid to the late Francis Rutledge, Newtown Cloghans, Knockmore during his con-celebrated Requiem Mass celebrated on Tuesday last, February 24. Francis, late of Newtown, Cloghans, went to his eternal reward in the loving care of the staff in St Agustine's Home Ballina in his 95th year. His remains reposed in McGowans Funeral Home on the Monday evening and his removal took place to St Teresa's Church, Rathduff on the Tuesday morning for his 11am Requiem Mass. There extended family, neighbours and friends gathered to pay their final respects to a much loved member of the community.

During the homily chief celebrant Fr Micheal Comer (family cousin) spoke fondly of his cousin Francis and of the welcome his family household extended them during their annual holidays down the years. He paid tribute to Francis for his services to the local community as postmaster where his kind, helpful and loyal service down the years endeared him to so many. He spoke of the Christian values Francis carried with him through life from the example set him by his parents.

Francis was one of a family of three born to parents John and Elizabeth Rutledge. Sadly the death of his father at an early age left their mother to support their family and run the family farm. While his brother Fr Robert and sister Violet left for London, he stayed on to help run the family farm.

He later became postmaster for the Clogans area where he served for many years together with his wife Claire until his retirement.

Francis was deeply saddened on the death of his wife Claire, his sister Violet and his brother Fr Robert in recent years and their passing left a void in his life that could never be filled. Predeceased by his wife Claire, parents John and Elizabeth, his brother Fr Robert and sister Violet, he is survived by a large circle of cousins, neighbours and friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended. He was laid to rest after Mass in the nearby Cloghans Cemetery. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
