Local Notes: Cora is special guest at Claremorris GAA dinner

An invitation is extended to the community of Claremorris to attend a celebration of all things GAA.
The Claremorris LGFA and GAA Club dinner dance and presentation of awards night will take place on Friday next at the McWilliam Park Hotel. Doors open at 7pm.
Hosted by MC Michael D McAndrew with special guest Cora Staunton, the club will take the opportunity to celebrate the significant achievements on the pitch for 2023 for the Claremorris GAA and LGFA teams, which include county and Connacht titles. They will also recognise accomplishments of their Gaelic4Mothers&Others.
This is an opportunity to meet up with friends, neighbours and enjoy a gala dinner with music and some surprises along the way. All welcome - it promises to be a fantastic night! The Claremorris Drama and Fringe Festival will place from March 14th to 23rd at the Claremorris Town Hall Theatre.
The 52nd festival opens on Thursday, March 14th, with a new play by Oisín Flores Sweeney, directed by Geoff Gould and starring Seamus O’Rourke and Joan Sheehy.
On Friday, March 15th, The Phoenix Players from Tubbercurry will perform ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell, adapted by Ian Wooldridge.
The Phoenix Players are welcomed back after an absence of a few years, their last production in Claremorris was ‘The Third Policeman’ by Flann O’Brien.
On Saturday, March 16, the Brideview Drama Group, based in Co Waterford, will play ‘Antigone’ by Sophocles, adapted by Don Taylor. They were formed in the late 1980s and began competing in the early 1990s. They won the Confined all-Ireland with ‘Moonshine’ by Jim Nolan in 2005.
On Sunday, March 17, Cornmill Theatre Group will stage ‘According to Rumour’ by Robert Scott.
On Monday, March 18, Claremorris welcomes back The Dalkey Players, All-Ireland champions 2023. Their production of Marina Carr’s ‘By the Bog of Cats’ held the Claremorris audience spellbound last March, so it was no surprise when it took top honours in Athlone. This year they bring us the Arthur Miller classic ‘The Crucible’.
On Tuesday, March 19, following their All-Ireland success in the One Act Finals, Claremorris will welcome back the Ray Leonard Players. They will perform ‘Eclipsed’ by Patricia Burke-Brogan.
Wednesday, March 20, St Patrick’s Drama Group will perform ‘Agnes of God’ by John Pielmeier.
On Thursday, March 21, the Glenamaddy Players bring ‘The Outgoing Tide’ by Bruce Graham to Claremorris.
On Friday, March 22, Clann Machua Drama Group will perform ‘Stolen Child’ by Yvonne Quinn and Bairbre Ní Chaoimh. ‘Stolen Child’ is one of the most popular plays to feature in the festival over the past few years.
Saturday, March 23, the Prosperous Dramatic Society perform ‘A View from the Bridge’ by Arthur Miller.

The death has occurred of Seamus Reid, Newtown, Balla Road, Claremorris and formerly of Tubbercurry, who passed away suddenly at home on Monday, January 29.
Seamus has been described as a ‘true gentleman’ in many of the online tributes.
Predeceased by his parents Jack and Maureen, sister Marie and brother Padraig (Pat), he is sadly missed by his wife Patricia (née Flatley), sons Cyril, Noel and Enda, daughters Alma (Loftus) and Una (McCabe), daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren Emma, Danny, Naoise, Aidan, Dara and Liam, brothers Brendan, Frank and Ray, sisters Kay, Angela and Ita; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Funeral Mass was held at St Colman’s Church, Claremorris, on Saturday last and Seamus was laid to rest afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery.
May he rest in peace.
Well done to Claremorris Colts RFC senior team who made it four wins from in the BOI Connacht J2A League.
They defeated Dunmore RFC 2nds 11-6 at the Fairground in Dunmore. The sides went in level at half-time three points apiece as the Colts’ Shane Meehan kicked a penalty.
In the second half, Meehan again kicked a penalty and centre Cathal McHugh crossed the try line to make it 11-6.
Four wins from four in the league for this team who are growing in strength and resolve, and despite the display being ugly at times, they got the much-needed result. The team and management would like to wish James Kean and his wife all the best on their imminent arrival, a new member to the Colts family.

Huge congratulations to Claremorris LGFA player Emma Higgins who has been named as captain of the Mayo under-16 team for 2024 by manager Francis Regan.
The club congratulated their player for being given the honour.
“Congratulations Emma, everyone at Claremorris LGFA is delighted for you and we wish you and your team and management the best of luck for the season ahead.”
The death has occurred of Frances Cunningham (née Martyn), Lisduff, Scardaune, Claremorris, suddenly but peacefully in her 93rd year at the Mayo University Hospital on Wednesday last.
Frances has been described by many as a ‘lovely lady’ and a ‘great neighbour’.
Predeceased by her husband Willie Joe, brothers Johnny and Tommie, Frances will be sadly missed by her son Michael, daughter Mary, granddaughter Aoife, daughter-in-law Margaret, son-in-law John, Aoife's partner David, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Funeral Mass took place at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Crossboyne on Friday last. Burial afterwards in Crossboyne Cemetery.
May her gentle soul rest in peace.
