Local Notes: Claremorris to host fundraiser for Children's Health charity

A family fundraiser in support of the Children’s Health Foundation will take place in Claremorris on Saturday, May 30th.
The event will be held at Tesco Claremorris from 10am to 3pm and will include a range of activities for children and families. Entertainment on the day will feature Nancy the Clown, music, dancing and a DJ, along with face painting and other activities. A cake sale and raffle will also take place, with a selection of prizes on offer.
Organisers are encouraging families to attend and support the event, with all proceeds going towards the Children’s Health Foundation.
Claremorris Golf Club is preparing to host its Annual Am-Am Fundraiser, which will run from May 26th to June 1st. The popular event, which is sponsored by CBE, is expected to attract golfers from across the region and will feature a wide range of prizes throughout the week.
The competition will include prizes for first through to tenth place, along with nearest-the-pin competitions on all three par-threes, longest drive prizes, veterans’ prizes, ladies’ 9-hole and 18-hole categories and a dedicated all-ladies team section.
Entry for the four-player team scramble is €140, while individual re-entry costs €20. A separate 9-hole competition will also take place at a cost of €80 per team, with €10 re-entry per person.
Club officials said preparations are well underway and confirmed that a large number of buggies and electric trolleys will be available for hire during the event.

The Claremorris Area Athletics Community Games will take place at the Claremorris Athletic Track on Sunday, May 17th. Registration will begin at 1.30pm, with competition getting underway at 2pm.
The event is open to children from Under-8 to Under-16 level, with competitors required to be under the relevant age category on July 31st, 2026. Novelty events will also be held for younger children in the Under-4 and Under-6 age groups.
Organisers have stressed that children do not need to be members of an athletics club to participate and are encouraging local families to come along and enjoy the occasion.
The annual event is expected to attract strong local participation and offers young people an opportunity to experience athletics in a fun and community-focused environment.
Rita Eagney was the winner of the Claremorris AFC 50/50 draw last week, taking home €527. Rita purchased the winning ticket in The Ranch.
The club congratulated Rita on the win and expressed sincere thanks to all who continue to support the weekly draw. Tickets are available online as well as through local shops and pubs.
Dermot Moore was the winner of the Claremorris GAA Club 50/50 draw last week, collecting €2,345. Dermot bought the winning ticket in O’Brien’s.
The club, which guarantees a minimum jackpot of €2,000 every week, congratulated Dermot on the win and thanked all who continue to support the draw. Funds raised play an important role in supporting underage coaching, facilities and future development, with tickets available online and in local outlets and pubs.
Claremorris Family Resource Centre is set to host a four-week acrylic painting course starting on this Friday, May 15th. The programme is designed for beginners as well as those looking to build on existing skills, and will run from 10am to 12pm.
The cost for the course is €60.

Claremorris South Community First Responders is currently inviting new volunteers to join its ranks.
The group plays a vital role in responding to local emergencies such as cardiac arrest, heart attacks and choking incidents, offering immediate assistance before paramedics arrive. Training, equipment and ongoing support are all provided, with no previous experience required.

Parents of young children are being encouraged to take part in the weekly Buggy Buddies meet-up in Claremorris. The group gathers every Thursday at 9.30am at McMahon Park, Clare Lake, for a relaxed walk followed by light exercise. Participants can also enjoy tea and coffee afterwards at Hegarty’s Centra.

Claremorris Historical Society is inviting the public to a special illustrated talk exploring the town’s past. Titled ‘Through the Streets of Claremorris 1900–1925’, the event will take place in the Town Hall on Monday next, May 18th, at 7.45pm, with free admission and all welcome.
The evening will feature a collection of restored photographs capturing people, businesses and street scenes from early twentieth-century Claremorris. The images, drawn from the Main Street Gathering archives, have been carefully brought to life in full colour by Andrew Newman.
Local historian Colmán Ó Raghallaigh will present the talk, sharing the stories behind the images and offering insight into daily life in the town during that period.
Organisers say the event offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience Claremorris as it was over a century ago, through both visual and historical storytelling.
A series of sprint training sessions continues at the Claremorris Athletic Track, supported by Mayo Sports Partnership and delivered by Mayo AC.
The sessions focus on improving speed, running technique and overall fitness and is open to adults of all abilities. The sessions take place each Saturday from 10.30am to 11.30am, with a €3 fee per session. For further details, contact Declan on 086-0731365.
GROW Mental Health continues to host its peer support meetings at Claremorris Family Resource Centre. The group offers a welcoming and confidential space for people to talk, listen and connect with others and is held every Wednesday from 11am to 1pm. The Dementia Dance Memory Group continues to meet weekly at the Cúram Family Centre in Claremorris. The sessions provide a supportive and social environment for those caring for people living with dementia, and take place each Wednesday from 11.30am to 1pm. Music, refreshments and conversation are central to the gatherings.

Claremorris AFC will once again run its popular MiWadi FAI Football Camps this summer. The camps are open to boys and girls aged six to 14 and include a variety of options such as general camps, girls-only sessions, goalkeeper training and the Football For All programme.

The death has occurred of Annie Kirrane of Parkatleva, Claremorris. Annie died on May 2nd in her 99th year in the wonderful care of the staff of Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar.
Annie was predeceased by her parents Peter and Mary, brothers John, James and Paddy, and sisters-in-law Nellie and Ellen.
Annie will be sadly missed by her niece Mary, nephew John and partner Yvonne, grandnephews Seán and Patrick, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends.
Annie’s remains reposed at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, Market Square, Claremorris on Tuesday evening, May 5th with removal to St Colman’s Church, Claremorris.
Annie’s Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday afternoon, May 6th, followed by burial afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery.
May she rest in peace.
The death has occurred of Michael Dennis Gallagher of Riverside Drive, Knock, and formerly of Co Donegal. Michael died peacefully at Ballinamore Nursing Home, Kiltimagh on April 29th, 2026.
Michael will be sadly missed by his loving wife Teresa, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Michael’s remains reposed at the Marian Funeral Home, Knock on Tuesday evening, May 5th with removal to St. John the Baptist Church, Knock. Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday morning, followed by burial afterwards in the local cemetery.

Seamus was predeceased by his father James, mother Annie, sister Bridie and brother Dennis. He will be deeply regretted by Breege, daughter Lynda, sons Declan, Damien and Jamie, his cherished grandchildren Lillie, Sean, Mason and Kayla, brothers Brendan and John Joe, sisters Patricia and Annette, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.
Seamus’ remains reposed at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, Market Square, Claremorris on Friday evening, May 8th. His Funeral Mass was held in St Michael’s Church, Taugheen on Saturday morning, May 9th, with private cremation taking place at a later date.
