Local Notes: Claremorris man Niall is top scorer in championship

Niall Hurley sits top of the Mayo Senior Football Championship scoring charts after the opening two rounds, having registered an impressive 3-14. Niall scored 2-5 against Kilmeena before adding 1-9 against Westport, with 3-9 of his overall tally coming from play.
The Senior Championship returns on September 5 when Claremorris face Charlestown in Aghamore in the final game of the group stage.
Claremorris Lions Club will hold its first meeting following the summer break in the Dalton Inn on Wednesday, September 9, at 8.30pm.
The club will then return to its usual schedule, with meetings taking place on the first Wednesday of each month.
The Great Mayo Bake Off returns this autumn, inviting amateur bakers from across the county to create their ultimate chocolate cake in support of charity.
The competition will form part of the launch of the 2027 'Plates for Dates' calendar, with prizes worth €500. Entry costs €10 and places are limited, with registration open until October 1.
This year’s fundraising will support Ronald McDonald House, Cancer Care West and Brickens Meals on Wheels.
Ronald McDonald House provides families with a home away from home while their children receive hospital care. The organisers highlight the experience of Tommy from Galway, whose family was able to remain close to him during the first eight months of his life. Tommy’s grandmother, Kay, is from Kilmaine.
Cancer Care West supports cancer patients and their families, including those who have to travel long distances for treatment. Its Inis Aoibhinn service provides accommodation close to the hospital at no cost to patients and their families while undergoing treatment.
Brickens Meals on Wheels provides meals to elderly people in Ballyhaunis and surrounding areas. Meals are freshly prepared and delivered hot to clients, with an emphasis on providing a quality service and care for those who need it.
Cakes for the Great Mayo Bake Off must be delivered to the McWilliam Park Hotel between 4.30pm and 6pm on October 9, with judging taking place later that evening.

Claremorris Musical Society will celebrate its 20th production with 'Calendar Girls – The Musical', featuring music and lyrics by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth. Based on the true story of a group of Yorkshire women who create a charity calendar, the production combines comedy, drama and music while celebrating friendship, community and resilience. Mayo Roscommon Hospice will also benefit from the society’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
Auditions, which are open to existing members and newcomers, will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8 and 9, in the Dalton Inn. Rehearsals will begin shortly afterwards, with performances scheduled from January 27 to 30.
The production will be directed by Donna Ruane, with Deirdre Lee as musical director and Jay Molyneux as choreographer.

The Claremorris Fine Gael District Executive will hold a meeting in the Western Hotel on Monday, September 28, at 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend. Among the items for discussion will be motions for the party’s Ard Fheis, which takes place in Cork on November 7 and 8.
A range of classes and activities will get underway at Cúram Family Centre over the coming weeks, with places available across quilting, crochet, yoga, breathwork and meditation.
A five-week Quilting Class will begin on Tuesday, September 22, running from 11am to 1pm. The cost is €60 and booking is essential. A five-week Crochet Class for beginners and intermediates will start on Wednesday, September 23, from 7 to 9pm, also costing €60.

The death has occurred of John Mooney of Mohera, Annacarty, Co Tipperary, and formerly of Irishtown. John died peacefully on August 19 in University Hospital Clonmel.
John was predeceased by his son Diarmuid, parents Tom and Celia, sisters Nora and Mary, and infant brother Kieran. He will be dearly missed by his wife Kathleen, sons Liam, Kieran and Johnny, daughters Karen, Edel and Suzanne, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers Pat, William and Brendan, sisters Sheila, Anne, Breda and Imelda, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, neighbours, relatives and friends.
John’s remains reposed at Whites Funeral Home, Cappawhite, on Tuesday evening last, with removal to St Brigid’s Church, Annacarty. Requiem Mass was held on Wednesday, followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

The death has occurred of Patrick Joseph (Paddy) Hughes of Southgate, London, and formerly of Claremorris. Paddy died peacefully on August 11, surrounded by his loving family.
Paddy was predeceased by his sisters Marion and Evelyn, and brother Eamonn. He will be sadly missed by his wife Cathleen, children Lorraine, Sean, Michael and Sinead, grandchildren Joseph, Alex, Eleanor, Louise, Olivia, Saskia, Kate, Hannah and Elizabeth, sons-in-law David and Dan, daughters-in-law Anna and Julia, brother Seamus, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Paddy’s funeral took place on Thursday last, with Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, New Southgate, followed by committal afterwards at Islington and St Pancras Cemetery.

Claremorris Family Resource Centre has announced a range of activities and courses beginning in September, including smartphone photography, textured art and traditional Irish music.
A Textured Paste Art Course with Dani Bueno begins on Friday, September 11, from 10am to noon. Suitable for beginners and those looking to explore their creativity, the course will introduce participants to techniques for creating textured artwork using paste. Places are limited.
A four-week Smartphone Photography Course begins on Wednesday, September 16, with a choice of morning classes from 10am to noon or evening classes from 7pm to 9pm. The course costs €25 and will cover camera settings and hidden features, composition and framing, natural light, portraits, landscapes, everyday photography and simple phone-based editing.
Club Ceol also returns in September, inviting musicians to bring their instruments and learn, play and share traditional Irish music together.

Jennifer Dillon was the winner of Claremorris GAA Club’s 50/50 draw last week. Jennifer won €1,602 on an online ticket.
The club congratulated Jennifer on her win and expressed its appreciation to everyone who continues to support the weekly draw. Tickets are available online and from local shops and pubs, with each entry helping to support the work of Claremorris GAA Club.
Ann Jordan was the winner of the Claremorris Soccer Club 50/50 draw last week. Ann’s winning ticket, number 528, was purchased online.
The club congratulated Ann on her successful entry and thanked all those who take part in the draw each week. Tickets continue to be available online as well as through retail outlets and pubs in Claremorris, providing supporters with a chance to win while contributing to the club’s activities.
Claremorris Golf Club held two sponsored 18-hole Stableford competitions in August.
The Centra Ballindine-sponsored competition, held from August 14 to 16, was won by Marina Reilly with 45 points, with Deirdre McDermott taking Category One with 37 points. In the men’s competition, James Kilkenny won with 43 points. Category One went to Jimmy Hegarty with 38 points, Category Two to Damien Cubbard with 42, Category Three to Paul Fitzpatrick with 38, and Category Five to Darragh Conderon with 40 points.
The McHugh's Spar Ballindine-sponsored competition took place from August 21 to 23. Florrie Campbell won the ladies’ competition with 39 points, while Riana Kean took Category One with 39 and Aisling Prendergast Category Two with 38 points. Anthony Hennelly won the men’s competition with 42 points. Damien Cubbard took Category Two with 39 points, Martin Devaney Category Three with 39, Bernard Brady Category Four with 37, and Ardil Jennings Category Five with 39 points.
The death has occurred of Patrick Cullina of Carrinlough, Irishtown. Patrick died peacefully at the Queen of Peace Nursing Home, Knock, on August 22 in his 96th year.
Patrick was predeceased by his wife Winifred and son Padraig. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Mary (Rice), daughter-in-law Maria, son-in-law Fran, grandchildren Kevin, Laura, Joseph, Gemma and Ben, great-grandchild Lily, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Patrick’s remains reposed in Carey’s Funeral Home, Ballindine, on Tuesday evening last, with removal to the Church of the Holy Family, Irishtown.
Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, followed by cremation afterwards at Shannon Crematorium.

The death has occurred of Noel Mullaney of Crumlin, Dublin, and formerly of Meelickmore. Noel died peacefully in the Mater Hospital, Dublin.
Noel was predeceased by his parents John Joe and Kate, sister Annie Mai, brothers Michael and Jimmy, and nephews Joe and Thomas.
Noel will be sadly missed by his brothers John and Tom Mullaney, sisters Josie Garvey (Limerick) and Helen Kelly (Clogher), brothers-in-law Christy and Eddie, sister-in-law Breege, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.
Noel’s remains reposed in Gilligan’s Funeral Home, on Thursday last with Funeral Mass on Friday in St Colman’s Church, Claremorris, followed by burial afterwards in St. Colman’s Cemetery.
