Local Notes: Catherine Humphreys represented Ballinrobe Community School, Mayo and Connacht in Junior Girls All-Ireland Golf finals

Catherine Humphreys (2nd year student), who represented Ballinrobe Community School, Mayo and Connacht in the recent Junior Girls All-Ireland Golf Finals, which were held in Milltown, Dublin.
Ballinrobe will host one of the annual ‘Darkness Into Light’ walks in aid of Pieta, at The Green, Ballinrobe, next Saturday, May 11, commencing at 4.15am. The organisers of this event are currently looking for volunteers to help out on the morning of the walk, and those interested in volunteering are asked to direct message the Ballinrobe Darkness Into Light Facebook page. The organisers of the Ballinrobe walk would also like to thank both Ballinrobe Town AFC and Ballinrobe Rugby Club for the use of their facilities.
Darkness Into Light 2024, proudly supported by Electric Ireland, will take place nationwide.
There are lots of ways to get involved: you can take part in a Darkness Into Light event; you can do Darkness Into Light in your own way with your family, friends and colleagues in your local area; or, you can also take on a Darkness Into Light Challenge by walking, running, jogging or swimming and fundraising for Pieta. Be a part of a powerful movement to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.

A competition in memory of Miko Murphy and deceased members of the club, took place on Thursday, May 25, and the results were as follows: 1st, Breege Connolly and Sean O’Neill; 2nd, William Enright and Angela Murphy; 3rd, Mary Feerick and Mary Cahalan; 4th, Sister Agnes Curley and Marian O’Connor; 5th, Lena Lowery and Maura McHugh; 6th, Patricia McDonagh and Stella Nalty. The competition was sponsored by Angela Murphy.
On the night there were 42 members present and all received prizes. Please note that Ballinrobe Bridge Club has ceased its activities for the summer break and will return on Thursday, September 5.
Well done to Ballinrobe Bridge Club members William Enright and Angela Murphy who were runners-up in the All-Ireland final of the Lambert Cup. Fellow Ballinrobe members Paul Waldron and Ann Cairns claimed fourth position. Sixty-six pairs competed in the Lambert Cup event which was held in the Templeogue Bridge Centre, Dublin, on Saturday, April 27. On Sunday, April 28, 53 teams competed in the team’s event, with the Ballinrobe team of William Enright and Angela Murphy, and Paul Waldron and Michael Waldron, winning the second session in the Cooper Cup team’s event. Well done to all involved.

Ballinrobe Community School Transition Year Environmental studies and Geography students recently enjoyed a morning at Lough Carra, Co Mayo. Lough Carra is the largest Marl Lake in Ireland. The students were facilitated by the Lough Carra Catchment Association ecologists to take samples of the invertebrates in the water to assess the water quality. The lake is under threat from various pollutants and the Life Programme is working to raise awareness in order to protect this precious Marl Lake.
Students enjoyed identifying the different species of invertebrates, finishing up with an ecology quiz. Ballinrobe Community School thank the Lough Carra Catchment Association for organising this event. An enjoyable day was had by all.

There was no winner of the €22,800 lotto jackpot draw which was held in Art O’Neill’s Bar, on Monday, April 29. The numbers drawn were 5, 8, 22 and 33. The €25 winners were Caroline Murphy and Anne McGowan.
Ballinrobe Racecourse will host Mayo Africa Day on Saturday, May 25, from 1 to 5pm. The day promises to be full of music, dance, food, culture and fun. All are welcome.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club will hold a presentation night for their youth and minis teams, on Friday, May 10. This event will take place in Ballinrobe Community School, with proceedings getting underway at 6.30pm. The event promises to celebrate and acknowledge the underage rugby teams in the club and all of the dedication and hard work that they have displayed throughout the season.
On the night there will be Player of The Year awards for the club’s youth’s teams; A Certificate of Appreciation will be presented to all the mini players; player only raffle on the night for multiple rugby items. It was also announced last week that there will be goodie bags available on the night for all the youth and mini players.

MACE stores from Mayo were honoured at the recent MACE Excellence Awards for achieving exceptional standards in retailing, which was held in Lawlor’s Hotel, in Naas in Co Kildare, and hosted by BWG Foods, owners and operators of the MACE brand in Ireland.
This year’s MACE Excellence Awards, held in association with Solution Management Associates (SMA) are only awarded to MACE stores that pass an intensive year-long inspection, including three unannounced audits, visits from mystery shoppers and a BWG-led compliance audit for every store as part of the qualifying criteria.
The Co. Mayo stores who received a MACE Excellence Award are: Dermot Fallon, Fallon’s MACE Ballinrobe; and Padraic Delaney, Delaney’s MACE Castlebar, and Delaney’s MACE Charlestown.

The sixth (and first since 2019) annual ladies lunch fundraiser for Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation took place on Friday afternoon, April 19, at The Lodge at Ashford Castle. The sold-out event was attended by 200 ladies from Mayo, Roscommon and the surrounding areas. Special guests on the day included RTÉ broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan, Dr Mary Ryan and Mayo Person of The Year, Rita Casey. Others in attendance included Mandy Maher, Niamh Ryan from Ella & Jo, Jennifer Wrynne, Michelle Fitzpatrick, Niamh O’Donovan, Jennifer Ryan, Hayley Coleman and Sarah Battle.
MC’d by Laurita Blewitt, the day began with a drinks reception overlooking Lough Corrib and was followed by a three course lunch in The Lodge as well as a fashion show, hosted by Carraig Donn and Catwalk Model Agency. Rita Casey spoke about the invaluable support she has received from Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation while she undergoes cancer treatment. Her words were inspirational and she received a warm and emotional response from all present. Entertainment on the day was provided by The Galway Tenors.
