Cong Moytura Heritage Society Spring Talk Series

A free talk by Patrick J. Duffy entitled "Wiring the countryside: Rural Electrification in Mayo and beyond in the 1950’s" is to be held in the Crossroads Community Centre, Cong, F31 PY97 on Thursday, February 27, at 8pm. This will be an interesting talk on how electricity was rolled out in South Mayo. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Ballinrobe Musical Society

Ballinrobe Musical Society thank everyone who helped make their production of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ a reality. The show ran for seven performances last week in Ballinrobe Community School, playing to a large audience on each occasion.

"We are incredibly proud, humbled and thankful for the reaction to our production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame," said a society spokesperson.

"We have had incredible fun preparing and performing this musical over the past few months. This show became a reality thanks to the countless, unselfish, unpaid hours of work by numerous groups and individuals. But we owe our biggest thanks to our audience and to the local community, who once again have been so generous and supportive of our society."

Robe Cinema

Robe Cinema is thrilled to announce that their next screening will be ‘Small Things Like These’ starring Cillian Murphy, and will be held in Ballinrobe Library, next Friday, February 28, at 8pm. Tickets cost €10 and are available to purchase in Martin Murphy’s Newsagents, Main Street, or by visiting the Robe Cinema Facebook page.

Robe Cinema is a community cinema set-up in Ballinrobe with screenings set to take place in Ballinrobe Library. The bustling south Mayo town used to always have a rich tradition of cinematic viewing, going back to the days of the cinema on Bowgate Street, and then the famous Ritz Cinema, which used to be situated on Bridge Street. Robe Cinema brings the latest movies to the big screen, hosts captivating film festivals, and offers diverse screenings for all interests.

Ballinrobe Bridge Club

The qualifying round for the Kelburne Cup was played in Kiltimagh on Monday, February 17, with Ballinrobe’s William Enright, Angela Murphy, and Ray and Helen Norton qualifying to play in the Kelburne Cup All-Ireland final, which will take place in Portlaoise, during the weekend of March 22 and 23. The aforementioned bridge players are wished the very best of luck from all in Ballinrobe Bridge Club.

The club held a competition on Thursday, February 13 and the results were as follows: 1st, Joan Tighe and Kathleen Walsh; 2nd, Paul Waldron and Marian O’Connor; 3rd, William Enright and Angela Murphy; 4th, Mary Kelly and Kathleen Nally; 5th, Maureen Gallagher and Mary Connaughton; 6th, Breege Connolly and Sean O'Neill.

The club will hold a charity night competition in aid of the Cranmore Centre, on Thursday, February 27.

Fundraising table quiz

Order of Malta Lourdes Pilgrimage 2025

Ballinrobe Town AFC

Congratulations to Ballinrobe Town’s Aaron McDonnell who was called up to the Mayo Oscar Traynor Squad for their tie against the Donegal League, last Sunday. Well done Aaron from all your teammates and friends at Ballinrobe Town AFC.

The junior men’s (A) team return to Super League action next weekend when they face Castlebar Celtic in Celtic Park. Also, the Ballinrobe Town (B) team are in league action on the same weekend when they host Glenhest Rovers (B) at The Green. Your support for the Red and White in both fixtures would be appreciated.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club U16 boys team

The Ballinrobe Rugby Club U16 boys’ team suffered a narrow 12-10 defeat away to Ballinasloe in the U16 Cup, on Sunday, February 16. Ballinrobe dominated the opening quarter and an excellent try by Donagh Gilligan, coupled with some excellent place kicking by team captain Eoin Jennings, helped propel the black and white into a 10-0 lead.

However, Ballinasloe ended the first half on a positive note and notched a try, which helped give the hosts a vital boost before the interval. Another crucial score five minutes into the new half by the East Galway side, helped shunt the hosts into a slender two point lead (12-10).

Despite doing their utmost, Ballinrobe couldn’t get back into the game and the home defence refused to yield as Ballinasloe held on to claim the spoils. Ballinrobe will have a chance to atone for this defeat in the next round.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, February 15, the Ballinrobe U14 boys’ team recorded a marvellous 39-31 victory away to Ballina, in the U14 boys’ cup. The game was a cracking contest from first whistle till last and the players to impress for the South Mayo side on the day were, CJ O’Hara, Mark O’Malley, and Naoise Burke.

The U14 boys’ next outing will be against Gort, when the Galway side visit The Green. The aforementioned fixture is scheduled to take place next weekend.

U17 boys rugby team

The Ballinrobe U17 boys’ team produced a battling display against Monivea in the U17 cup on Sunday week last; however, the Galway visitors recorded a 29-10 victory in the end.

Senior Women’s Connacht Cup

On Sunday, February 16, an understrength Ballinrobe Rugby Club Women’s team suffered a 60-5 defeat away to Tuam/Oughterard in the Women’s Senior Cup. Ballinrobe will now enter the Plate competition and no doubt the women’s team will do their utmost to progress in this competition and end their season on a positive note.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club 50/50 draw

The club held its weekly 50/50 draw on Sunday, February 16, with Maeve Staunton the lucky winner of €475.

Hollymount-Carramore GAA Club dinner dance

The Hollymount-Carramore GAA Club dinner dance will take place on Saturday, March 1, in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris. Music on the night will be provided by ‘Streetwise’, followed by a DJ. Tickets cost €50 per-person, and are available to purchase from any club officer. Buses to the venue on the night will be departing from Robeen and Hollymount.

There was no winner of the €8,900 lotto jackpot draw which was held on Tuesday, February 18. The numbers drawn were 6, 17, 30 and 32. The €30 winners were Pat Mullarky, and Joe Greaney. The €25 winners were John McKenzie, and Maura Judge Morrin.

The Neale GAA/LGFA Club 2024 awards night

The Neale GAA/LGFA annual awards night took place in Ryan’s Hotel, Cong, on Saturday, February 8. Tickets for the event were sold out and a memorable and enjoyable night was had by all. The award winners were as follows: LGFA Young Player of the Year, Eleanor Whelan; LGFA Junior Player of the Year, Rebecca Hynes; Under-21 Player of the Year, Dáithí Butler; Junior Player of the Year, John Coleman; Intermediate Joint Player of the Year, Tom Lydon and Robbie Hughes; Hall of Fame 2024, Paddy Mylotte and Margaret Kavanagh; Hall of Fame 2020, Con Conroy.

The Neale GAA/LGFA Club underage presentation evening took place in the Crossroads Community Centre, Cong, on Sunday, February 9, and the award winners were as follows: The Neale GAA Club most improved awards for 2024: U12 boys, Sean Higgins; U13, Fergal Canny; U13, Tom Costello; U14, Oisin Murphy; U15, Jamie Naughton; U16, Patrick Cosgrove; U17, Jack Kelly; U18, Jack Coleman.

The Neale LGFA most improved awards for 2024: U12 girls’, Mikaela Russell; U13, Casey Glynn; U14, Noelle Tiernan; U15, Rachel Ryan; U16, Laura Hoade; U18, Eleanor East. The evening was made even more memorable by the attendance of special guests which included Mayo senior players Tommy Conroy and Fergal Boland, Mayo LGFA senior player Alannah Devereux, and Mayo LGFA legend Cora Staunton. A wonderful evening was had by all and well done to all of the award recipients.

Ballinrobe GAA Club lotto draw

There was no winner of the €25,700 lotto jackpot draw which was held on Monday, February 17. The numbers drawn were 14, 22, 30 and 32. There was also no winner of the match three (€100) prize.

Garrymore GAA Club lotto draw

There was no winner of the €7,000 lotto jackpot draw which was held in Garrymore, on Sunday, February 16. The numbers drawn were 2, 8, 20 and 35. The €50 winners were Michael Cummins, Roundfort; Bridie Corcoran, Annfield, and Emma Stagg, Hollymount.

Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail

The Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail is having its annual Walking Festival in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice on Saturday, May 10. Results for Monday night, February 17; 1st John Beckett,  2nd shared by Sean Ryder, Vinnie Lawless, Bridie Walsh and Andrew Holland, 3rd shared by Sean Carney, Thomas Conroy, Sean Canny, John McGuire and Liam Walsh. Raffle winners were;Andrew Holland, Mag Needham, Sean Moran and Johnnie Gavin. There were lots of other winners in the special raffle in aid of St Paul's NS Cloggernagh.
