Local Notes: Book of stories and poems is launched in Ballinrobe

'Living in Hope' is a book written and illustrated by Imelda Hughes which contains illustrated stories and poems on nature, people, history, and memories that dominate hope. All the proceeds go to the Mayo/ Roscommon Hospice. Imelda is pictured at the launch with her granddaughters, Ruby May and Kayla Hughes and Joe Greaney who was MC on the night. The book is for sale in Martin Murphy's, Ballinrobe.
Ballinrobe Town Park will hold its annual general meeting next Monday, December 9, in the Maple Youth Centre, Bowgate Street, at 8pm. For further details and information contact 087 2889232.
The annual general meeting of Ballinrobe Civic, Arts and Amenity Centre will take place on Wednesday (tomorrow), December 4, at 7.30pm in the Town Hall (the Valkenburg). All are welcome to attend.
There was no winner of the €25,000 lotto jackpot draw which was held in John O’Hare’s Bar, on Monday, November 25. The numbers drawn were 3, 9, 14 and 18. The €25 winners were Emma Gill, and Paidi Morrin.

Ballinrobe GAA and LGFA held its annual dinner dance at a packed Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, on Saturday, November 23. The award winners were as follows: Young LGFA Player of the Year (presented by minor girls coach Elaine Treacy) Kayla Maloney; Young Junior Men’s Player of the Year (presented by junior men’s coach Pat Duffy), Simon Boyle; Young Intermediate Player of the Year (presented by intermediate manager Peter Ford), Ryan Corcoran; Junior Ladies Player of the Year (presented by junior ladies coach Denise Horan), Ailise Burke; Junior Men’s Player of the Year (presented by Pat Duffy), Garry Mellett Connolly; Intermediate Player of the Year (presented by Peter Ford), Oran O’Malley; Club Person of the Year (presented by Chairman John Sweeney), Des May; Hall of Fame Winners (presented by John Sweeney), Dermot Keane and his brother Micheál Keane. The MC for the night was Liam Horan. Overall, a memorable and enjoyable night was had by all.
Congratulations to Oisín Joyce who was named the 123.ie U20 Athlete of the Year. This is on the back of Oisín after winning a bronze medal in the men’s javelin championships which were held in Lima, Peru, back in August. Oisín is a member of the Lake District Athletic Club, and on Thursday, August 29, threw 73.89m to secure Irelands’ first and only medal of this year’s World U20 Athletics Championships. Not only did the talented 19 year old win a bronze medal, but he also set a new Irish U20 record as well. The Ballinrobe native is also the first Irish person to win a throws event at the World U20 Athletics Championship. Well done Oisín from your many friends and supporters in Ballinrobe.
Pickleball takes place in the Lakeside Sport and Fitness Centre, Station Road, Ballinrobe, every Saturday, from 1.30pm to 3pm. Pickleball is an indoor or outdoor racket/paddle sport where two players (singles) or four players (doubles) hit a perforated hollow polymer ball over a 36 inch high net using solid faced paddles. The two sides hit the ball back and forth over the net until one side commits a rule infraction. This weekly game in the Lakeside Centre will be purely based on a fun and social outlet for adults and proved very popular the last time it was held at the venue. Rackets will be provided to those taking part. The cost to take part in this fun and social get-together is €5 per-person. Margaret Lynagh was the winner of €442 in the weekly 50/50 draw conducted by Ballinrobe Rugby Club. The draw was held in John O’Hare’s Bar, on Sunday, November 24.
The club’s U16 boys’ team faced Gort RFC in a Division Two Round Four fixture at The Green, on Sunday, November 24. In what was a one-sided encounter, Ballinrobe recorded a highly impressive 77-10 victory against their East Galway visitors. Well done to all involved.
Rose O’Toole was the winner of €45 in last week’s 50/50 draw conducted by the Tacú Family Resource Centre.

The Santa Experience returns to Hollymount Hall next Sunday, December 8, from 2 to 6pm. Those attending can meet Santa Claus, Mrs Claus, and the elves. Events taking place on the day include barbeque, bouncing castle, face painting, arts and crafts, hot chocolate, and lots of surprises. Tickets cost €15 per-child. Hollymount GAA Club thank the many volunteers who recently took part in the club’s annual bucket collection in Ballinrobe. Also recently, Hollymount Ladies GAA Club held a bucket collection in Claremorris. All funds raised from these collections will go towards the club’s new facilities development, which is underway.
