Local Notes: Ballinrobe Tidy Towns receive 'Young Persons in Tidy Towns 2024' regional winner accolade.

The Ballinrobe Tidy Towns Group received the ‘Young Persons in Tidy Towns 2024 Regional Winner’ accolade, at an awards ceremony held in Westport, on Monday, April 7.
The Ballinrobe Tidy Towns Group thank everyone who contributed to this achievement.
Pendant Alarms for older people are available by contacting the Tacú Family Resource Centre at 094 9542908. The alarms are connected to a contact centre to enable older people of 65 or older, to continue to live securely in their homes with confidence, independence and peace of mind.

The Tacú Family Resource Centre is delighted to announce the following activities for children over the Easter Holidays. On Saturday, April 19, in the community garden situated behind the church, a sensory egg hunt will take place from 11.30am to 12 noon, with an egg hunt for all taking place from 12 noon to 2pm. Booking is essential for the egg hunts which are spread out over ten minute slots. Parents wishing to register their children for the egg hunts are asked to email tacuevents@gmail.com or text/WhatsApp 087 3802650.
Also on the same day and in the parish centre, the following events will take place: Kids disco (12 noon), magic show (12.30pm), kids disco (1pm), magic show (1.30pm) There is no need to pre-book for the discos or magic shows.
The cost to take part in all of the above events is €5 per-child and each child will receive an Easter egg, and parents can pay at the parish centre or at the egg hunt.
The Ballinrobe Market will also take place in the Ballinrobe Library Grounds on the day, with plenty of activities taking place.
Community gardens are not just about gardening, as they are also important social spaces where people can meet up in an outside environment. Community gardens are places where nature works its magic and are also places that can help create friendships, where local’s plant, grow, and harvest a wide range of fruits and vegetables.
The Ballinrobe Community Garden is situated behind the parish house on the church grounds. The garden has a poly tunnel, raised beds, a seating area plus much more. The garden is open seven days a week during daylight hours.

A Dementia Café for people living with dementia, and family carers, will take place on Tuesday, May 6, from 11am to 1pm in the Tacú Family Resource Centre. The café provides a warm welcoming place for people to meet others living with dementia/cognitive impairments, their carers and health and social care professionals. Frances Vahey was the winner of €70 in last week’s 50/50 draw conducted by the Tacú Family Resource Centre. Participants can buy a weekly 50/50 ticket (€2 each or three tickets for €5) with all tickets sold entered into a weekly jackpot draw. Fifty per-cent of the weekly ticket sales goes to the Tacú centre, with the other 50 per-cent going to the jackpot winner. The 50/50 tickets are available to purchase in the Tacú Family Resource Centre, and the draw will take place every Tuesday night at the weekly game of bingo in the parish centre.
The Ballinrobe Tidy Towns Group will hold their annual Spring clean-up on Sunday, April 27, at 10am. The meeting point is the parish centre car park (F31 TY03). Litter pickers, brushes, and gloves will be provided but, if you have your own, please bring them along. Children are very welcome to help; however, U16’s must be accompanied by an adult. All are welcome.
Ballinrobe Town AFC is seeking volunteers who can spare one hour per-week to help with the club’s ‘Football for All’ programme for 2025. All training will be provided and you do not need previous experience in football. Football for All is an inclusive football programme.
This programme is especially suitable for kids with ASD, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, Down Syndrome, and impaired sight and hearing. It is hoped that this group will begin its football activities after Easter.
Ballinrobe Town AFC will hold a music bingo social night in Flannery’s Bar and Restaurant, Cornmarket, on Saturday, April 26, at 8pm. Music bingo works in a similar fashion to regular bingo, except instead of numbers the host DJ plays one-minute clips of popular songs and participants tick the songs off on their bingo cards.
The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the South Mayo O’Mara Cup took place last week and Ballinrobe will face either Claremorris or Hollymount-Carramore in the semi-final at Flanagan Park, on Friday, May 2, at 7.30pm. The Claremorris v Hollymount-Carramore quarter-final is set to take place this coming Friday, April 18, in Claremorris at 7pm. There was no winner of the €26,400 lotto jackpot draw which was held on Monday, April 7. The numbers drawn were 10, 15, 16 and 32. The match three winner of €100 was Oliva Feeney.
The Ballinrobe junior ladies team played their opening fixture of the Frank Kelly Memorial League against visiting Kiltane, at the Tim Kelly Pitch, Flanagan Park, on Sunday morning, April 6. Kiltane were the better side on the day and recorded a deserving victory, however, Ballinrobe will learn from this outing and will try to improve as the season progresses. Before the start of the game a minutes silence was observed for the late Éilis Maloney, Currabuí, Ballinrobe.
The Ballinrobe (B) team recorded a slender 1-15 to 1-14 victory away to Ballina Stephenites, on Sunday week last, in what was the opening round of the Division Three (B) season.

In the South Mayo O’Mara Cup quarter-final draw, Garrymore were drawn to face a difficult away assignment against Mayo Gaels. This tie is set to take place at Mayo Abbey next Friday, April 18 and will throw-in at 7pm. Should Garrymore win in the aforementioned last eight showdown, the red and white would then proceed to the semi-final to face Davitts in Ballindine.
