Ballinrobe club members take on Croke Park abseil for Mayo Cancer Support

Ballinrobe GAA and LGFA acknowledges club members Michaela Tuffy, Conor O’Brien and Conor Keane who will represent the club in the Croke Park Abseil Challenge on October 10, in aid of Mayo Cancer Support. Taking on a 150-foot descent from the roof of Croke Park requires real courage, and the trio have shown great heart in accepting an invitation to take on the challenge at the iconic venue. In the process, they will raise funds and awareness for a charity that provides crucial free services to individuals and families affected by cancer across Mayo.

The two Conor’s are members of the club’s intermediate team, and they also contribute to club activities in a wide variety of ways. Michaela, a member of the junior ladies’ football team, has also shown great leadership in the club in recent years.

If you’d like to lend a hand – by sharing their fundraising page or making a small donation – it would mean a great deal to them and to those who benefit from Mayo Cancer Support’s services.

We commend Michaela and the two Conor’s for representing Ballinrobe GAA & LGFA with such spirit. To support or find out more, please visit:

Quigley Cup quarter-final

On Monday, September 8, the Ballinrobe Town U18 boys team suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat at home to Westport United in the quarter-finals of the Quigley Cup. Ballinrobe played some neat football during the early stages of the game and went close to taking the lead on seven minutes, when Dylan Mallon’s strike was saved by the Westport ‘keeper Tom Williams. One minute later, Ian Place’s outfit went close to taking the lead once again, when some patient build-up play resulted in a chance for Kyle Burke, whose effort fizzed narrowly wide. Against the run of play, United snatched the lead on 17 minutes. Fionn McLoughlin’s strike was parried by Rory Devereux; however, the poaching Cathal Howley was on hand to tap the ball to the back of the net.

Ballinrobe didn’t panic and the red and white could well have restored parity when a chance fell to Clinton Osawenze, however, his effort was thwarted by the alert Williams.

The Town continued to press, with a free-kick from Padraig Mylotte on 25 minutes forcing another save from Willaims. However, Westport finished the opening half strongly and two goals on 36 and 37 minutes from Dara Reynolds and Owen Hughes, garnered a commanding 3-0 interval lead for the visitors.

On the resumption, Ballinrobe tried their level best to get back into the game, with a strike from Osawenze forcing an alert save from Williams, before the Westport custodian was called into action once again to deny Mylotte’s free-kick.

Westport galvanized their lead on 70 minutes, courtesy of a tidy goal by substitute Calum Moogan. On the stroke of full-time, Owen Hughes added a fifth for United to help round off what was an impressive display by the visitors.

Ballinrobe Town: R Devereux, L Duddy, C Flannery, P Mylotte, J McTigue, F McConville, D Mallon, K Burke, N Petrovic, H Murtaza, C Osawenze.

Subs used: B Scully, M Ncube, M Cleary, E Donnelly.
