Little Gem Puppets bring the much-loved children’s fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood to Claremorris Town Hall Theatre on Sunday, July 21. This is an interactive Puppet Show where the audience can get involved with the characters and help build the story. Tickets are available on the town hall’s website.

The country had its coldest June since 2015 last month. A statistic, reported by the Irish Examiner, said Claremorris had the month’s lowest air temperature. This stat was recorded on June 12, when the temperature fell to 1.8C.
Please note that tree-felling operations will take place in Clare Lake in Claremorris over the next few weeks. These works involve the removal of badly diseased and dangerous ash trees due to the ash dieback problem. Parts of the walkway may be shut down from time to time as required. The park management has apologised for any inconvenience.
Recently, Luke Gibbons (27) from Claremorris was selected to represent Ireland as a Climate Reality Leader by Former US Vice President Al Gore. The Climate Reality Project, founded by Al Gore, focuses on empowering individuals to take action on climate change. Gibbons, along with other newly selected Climate Reality Leaders, underwent comprehensive training designed to equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to advocate for sustainable practices and policies in their home countries. Gibbons spent three days in Rome receiving training from Al Gore himself among other notable climate leaders including Federica Fricano, Co-Chair of the G7, Roberto Gualieri, Mayor of Rome and Haris Doukas, Mayor of Athens.
Luke was selected as an Al Gore Climate Leader on the back of his expertise surrounding climate change. Luke is an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Scholar and PhD Candidate at Trinity College Dublin and a former Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School. His award-winning research focuses on company directors’ duties and climate change risks. In February 2024, Luke’s research was recognised across the Atlantic when he was named in the Top 40 Under 40 Irish in America, winning the People’s Choice Award with an incredible 21,496 votes.
Gibbon’s appointment came just months after his selection as a President Mary Robinson Young Climate Leader, where he has already engaged in dialogue with the Former President as a speaker at the Mary Robinson Climate Conference 2024 in Ballina.
Claremorris and District Lions Club members were joined by Mary McHugh of Childhood Cancer Fund and Daisy Lodge and staff of Supervalu Claremorris for the presentation of a cheque for €1,700. They thanked those who contributed towards the worthy cause and joined them for the Mid Summer Night Walk.
The first day of the National Finals of the Outdoor Championships took place recently and Claremorris Athletic Club were well represented. Youngster Philip Griffith stole the show by taking Gold in the U12 600m in a PB time. He also brought home a bronze medal in the long jump category. Well done Philip.
A semi-automatic mindray defibrillator and heated case have been installed at the Ballyhaunis Road, Claremorris. This defibrillator is located at the entrance of the College Green, postcode F12NP96. This is a massive achievement in such a short time. Well done to all involved and to Paul Maher for all his input, dedication and success in this project for the community.

A youth’s darts open day will take place in the Western Hotel, Claremorris, on July 14. In attendance will be Mayo darters, Martin and Conor Heneghan. The event gets underway at 2pm.

A 29-unit development in the town has been granted planning permission in Claremorris. Twelve three-bedroom houses along with nine two-bedroom homes will be built at Lower James Street.
The Pots of Fun (Claremorris) staff recently completed a first aid responders training. This training will equip them with essential lifesaving skills and the confidence to act in an emergency. They thanked Michael Conlon and Michael Hughes for providing the practical and informative training.
The relic of St Charbel will visit Knock Shrine on July 27 and will be present at 3pm Mass in the Basilica. There will be an opportunity for blessing with the relic after Mass. A Mystic and Maronite hermit, St Charbel was born in 1828 in Lebanon and became a Maronite monk at Annaya Abbey at the age of twenty. As a hermit, Charbel was famous for his spiritual gifts. He spent almost a quarter century displaying many miraculous abilities and was noted for his love of the Holy Eucharist. St Charbel died in 1898. He was beatified in 1965 and canonized in 1977 by Pope Paul VI (r. 1963-1978).

The GAA/LGFA Underage Academy training takes place every Saturday morning from 9.30am – 10.30am for boys and girls from U6 – U12. Contact Tanya on 087 9014 363. The Rambling House is held every 2nd Tuesday evening at 7.30pm in the community centre. Ladies Club meet every Tuesday at 8pm in the community centre; and the Wednesday Get-together takes place every Wednesday morning in the community centre from 11.30am. All welcome.
Islandeady Walks Group are continuing to organise their weekly walks around the community, and new walkers are joining every week. Last week the walk started at the Key West and took them around the Graffymore Loop and returned to the Key West. The group would like to thank Gary of the Key West for kindly supplying refreshments, which were greatly appreciated by all.
Yesterday, Monday, July 8, the group met at the Arch, where the walk went via Keelogues, and link with the Aughagower road through Carrowbeg village, then on to Cashel, turning right at ‘ Conways’ house, walking towards Kilbree village and back through Keelogues and the Arch. This was mostly flat terrain, with a slight uphill and a big downhill!!. A cuppa was awaiting near the end. Once more all are welcome, feel free to invite anyone you wish, or even to walk part of the way with the group. See you there!.

The annual Islandeady Fun Run/Walk takes place on Saturday, August 3, at 10am from Jack’s Cottage. It is open to everyone of all ages and abilities to participate.
