Saturday night live on Main Street will be The High Stool Prophets from 9.30pm preceded by support band Ríl Óg from 8pm. Sunday it’s Soccer World Cup in Kiltimagh Knock United, Family Fun Day with kiddies tractor run from 12.30pm. Sunday night live on Main Street, a ‘big welcome back’ awaits The Tumbling Paddies who will be on stage from 9.30pm, joined by champion Irish dance group Croí na hEireann. Murray’s Funfair will be in the Festival Field throughout the festival which ends on Monday, July 15, with the Coillte Golf Cup competition at Balla Golf Club.

Golf competition

The 9th annual Coillte Cup Golf Tournament will close the Coillte Come Home festivities at Balla Golf Club on Monday, July 15.

This fun event for local golfing enthusiasts has been run every year since the festival restarted in 2016 and is sponsored by Tommy Ryan of Ryans Bar where the golfers retreat to after playing in the modified scramble format that has seen 24 different winners in 8 years.

For some, it’s their only golfing outing of the year, for others, it’s as eagerly awaited as a major championship. The craic on the course is the important thing.

Names are already being taken (contact Shane Freeman or Tommy Ryan) and numbers look similar to last year when Seamus Swift, Liam Lydon and David Lydon became the latest winners. There is also a fundraising aspect and last year €2,700 was collected for Mayo/Roscommon Hospice in memory of Jarlath Heneghan who was a fierce supporter of the new event and its predecessor of the 80s and 90s when it was run at Kiltimagh Pitch and Putt.

The late Dermot Roughneen

The death took place on June 21 of Dermot J Roughneen M. Ag Sc (Hort), Sandymount, Dublin and formerly of James St, Kiltimagh. Dermot died peacefully at Abbeybreaffy Nursing Home where he had been a resident for the past 18 months and news of his death was greeted with a deep sense of sadness in Kiltimagh where he grew up.

In his late 70s Dermot was son of the late Molly and Joe Roughneen (former Principal of Kiltimagh Boys NS) and was also prededeased by his sisters Fidelma, Marie, Patricia, brothers-in-law Barry and Tom. Dermot will be sadly missed by his loving sister Rosaleen Hennessy (Meath), brothers John (Castlebar) and Gerard (Dublin), brother-in-law Tom, sisters-in-law Carmel and Fiona, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many friends.

Dermot was educated at the local boy's national school and later as a boarder at St Nathy's College in Ballaghadereen before attending University College, Galway and UCD where he qualified as a horticulturest. He was a regular visitor to Kiltimagh over the years where he had many friends including his GAA colleagues with whom he won a 1967 county junior medal when Kiltimagh defeated Balla in the final on St Patrick's Day 1968 (postponed due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak). He was also a staunch Mayo supporter and it was ironic that he passed away on the weekend that ended Mayo's hope of progressing further in this year's championship.

Dermot was a friendly and outgoing person, a loving and caring brother, uncle and granduncle and a good friend to many. He will be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing and interacting with him down through the years. May he rest in peace.

Dermot reposed in O'Hora's Funeral Home, with removal afterwards to the Church of the Holy Family and where his Funeral Mass was celebrated on Sunday morning, June 23, followed by burial in Kilkinure Cemetery.

Defeat for minors

They say that goals win matches and this was certainly the case when Shamrock Sarsfields scored 6-6 to Kiltimagh’s 2-12 in the East Mayo Minor A championship played in Charlestown last Tuesday evening. Kiltimagh who were short several of their regulars got off to a disastrous start when they conceded two goals in the opening minutes from which they never fully recovered even though they got within 2 points of the winners with about 10 minutes remaining.
