Local Notes: All the news from Kiltimagh
Alan Dillon of Fine Gael was the biggest vote-getter in Kiltimagh in the recent Dáil election. He attracted 261 first preferences, according to the tally figures.
Paul Lawless of Áontu was the second most popular in the town boxes, getting 142 first preferences. Both were eventually elected. Gerry Murray of Sinn Féin came in third in Kiltimagh on 126, but didn’t make it. Fianna Fáil’s Lisa Chambers was next on 105.
Alan Dillon took first place from Paul Lawless in Craggagh too. Dillon had 36 No 1s to Lawless’s 27 with Lisa Chambers in third place with 17.
Gerry Murray ran away with it in Midfield, with 92 votes, to Dara Calleary’s 48. The Fine Gael vote fell to 33 for Dillon and 24 to Mark Duffy.
It was a similar story in Kinaffe National School where Murray polled 44 first preferences. Alan Dillon was in second place there on 39.
Mary Colahan and Ray Nally won last week’s Bridge, with Geraldine Forde and Jerome Tarpey second and Thomas McNicholas and Cait McTigue third.
Bridge is held in the Park Hotel every Tuesday at 7.30pm. The club is open to new members joining at any time. Casual pairs are also welcome.
Bridge classes are available for beginners and anybody interested can contact John McCrohan on 087-2422945.
Kiltimagh Tidy Towns will hold its annual Pub Quiz in Tommy Ryan’s Bar on Friday next, December 13th, commencing at 9.30pm. Gerry King is the quizmaster, and the entry fee is €40 per table.
Kavanagh’s SuperValu are sponsoring a wonderful Christmas Hamper and there will be other fantastic prizes as part of the raffle. Please support the local Tidy Towns and the wonderful volunteers who work so hard throughout the year to keep the community clean and tidy.
And it’ll be a fantastic evening’s entertainment as well.
Ann Ivers was last week’s winner of the Kiltimagh 50/50 draw. Ann won €610 in the draw which was held in O’Hora’s.
Last week's Kiltimagh Knock United 50/50 jackpot winner was Toby Kilkenny from Knock, who collects €281 for supporting the club's weekly fundraiser.

Congratulations to Kiltimagh Knock United's Ethan Hosty on winning a Connacht title with Mayo in the provincial Under 18 inter-league. Mayo had led 3-0 from the first leg of the series, but lost 4-1 last Wednesday night.
Ethan scored the crucial goal to send the game to extra-time, with Mayo going on to win on penalties.
The death has occurred of Pia Gill of Greenfields, Kiltimagh.
Pia was predeceased by her parents John and Maureen and brother Christy. She will be lovingly remembered by her brothers Larry, Marty, James and Daniel, sisters Ann, Bernie, Pauline, Peggy, Sally and Mary, sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and fondly remembered and missed by all the extended family.
Pia’s Funeral Mass was held on December 2nd in the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh followed by cremation in Shannon Crematorium.
After the massive success of last year’s competition, the second Coillte Cup Battle of the Townlands will take place again on St Stephen’s Day.
The competition sees Swinford/Bohola face a Mountain/Balla selection in the first semi-final. The second semi-final is between The Townies and Knock/Kilkelly.
The first game will commence at 11am and will be played as 15-a-side, with a mixture of men and women on each team. Each game will last a total of 20 minutes, and rolling subs will be used.
In an era of rule reviews, points scored by women in these games will count as two points.
The teams beaten in the semi-finals will play a shield final at 12 noon with the Coillte Cup Final being played at 12.30pm. All games will be played on the astroturf pitch at the CEO in Bekan.
The entry fee is €10 per player and all players must arrive at the ground togged out.
There will also be a penalty shoot-out for Under-10s and Under-12s. This will commence at 11.30am and there will be prizes for the winners.
And once again, the event is in support of two great charities: Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Mayo Roscommon Hospice. All families, children and spectators welcome, and they can avail of teas, coffees and cakes at the event.
The Parents' Association of St Aidan’s National School will hold a Christmas Prize Draw on Thursday, December 19th.
There are cash prizes, vouchers, hampers and spot prizes on offer. The total prize pool is worth €2,000. Tickets are available online via iDonate.
The death has occurred at Mayo Hospice in Castlebar of Raymond Gallagher of Cloonkedagh Road, Kiltimagh.
Raymond was predeceased by his brothers Tom and Paddy and sisters Bridie, Evelyn, Mary and Una. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Mary, sister Margaret, daughters Moira, Oonagh and Mairéad, sons Patrick, Martin and Eamonn, sons-in-law Paul and Ludo, daughters-in-law Emma and Karen, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours.
Raymond’s Funeral Mass was held on Monday last at the Star of the Sea Church, Cornboy and he was laid to rest afterwards in Kilgalligan Cemetery.
A crafting session takes place each Monday morning at 11am in the Folk Cafe. The event is open to the public and anyone attending is asked to bring along whatever they’re working on. It is an opportunity to pick up some tips and share ideas.
Congratulations are extended to J.T. and Teresa King of Carrandine, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last week.
J.T. and Teresa were married at 8.30am in Kiltimagh Church on Monday, November 25th, 1964, and celebrated the event sixty years to the day.
Teresa was originally Teresa McManus from Thomas Street. The bridesmaid for the big day was Teresa Horan and Tom Tuohy was best man. As was the tradition at the time, a wedding breakfast was held in Churchfield House Hotel, Knock. Later that evening, the newlyweds took the train to Galway to celebrate their honeymoon.
J.T. and Teresa enjoyed a family get-together to celebrate the anniversary at the house of their daughter Ann and her husband, Michael Moran, on Park Road. Fr Pat Lynch was on hand to celebrate a special Mass for the couple. Fr Pat was busy that day - it was his third Mass. He was lucky J.T. and Teresa didn’t want the celebration to coincide with the exact time of the wedding ceremony.
J.T. and Teresa have three children - Joe and his wife, Julie, live in Carrandine; Paul and his wife Christina, live in Amityville, Long Island, New York and Ann and her husband, Michael Moran, live in Kiltimagh.
Denis Regan and Aidan McDonagh took first place in last week’s card game. In second place was Jack Ryan and Ciaran McDonnell. Third was shared between Mary and Jimmy Doyle and John Clancy and Martin Regan. The Last 10 prize was claimed by Francis McNicholas and Tom Flatley.
Chris Flatley and Manus Kilcoyne won spot prizes and the raffle winners were Alo Langan, Ciaran McDonnell, Mary Carney and Flor Higgins.
In a lengthy heads-up battle, Derry O’Sullivan got the better of Michael Sheridan to take first prize in Round 11 of the Winter Poker League in Teach O’Hora on Wednesday night last. The third prize was won by Dave Brennan. The other finalists and their finishing positions were: 4th, Michael Higgins; 5th, John Reynolds; 6th, Dylan Coleman; 7th, Paul Walsh; 8th, Keith Lydon; 9th, A.N. Other.
The previous week in Round 10 Keith Lydon was in ruthless form knocking out eleven players on his way to victory. The runner-up was Dylan Coleman with Gerry Groarke finished third.
Keith Lydon is top of the league table on 158 points followed by Michael Sheridan on 141 and Paul Walsh on 126. The rest of the top twelve is: Derry O’Sullivan 117, Enda Ruane 116, Gerry Groarke 111, Martin Regan 107, Pat Boyle 107, Michael Higgins 101, A.N. Other 92, John Reynolds 91, AN Other 91.
The league runs for 15 weeks with tournaments in Teach O’Hora every Wednesday night at 8pm. Entry each night is €20 with an optional re-entry and late registration available for 90 minutes. €5 from every entry goes towards the league final prize pool with the rest paid out on the night.
After 15 weeks, the top twelve players qualify for the Grand Final to compete for an estimated prize pool of an estimated €2,000 and they will be joined by two more players from the play-off tournament which is open to all non-qualifiers.
In the monthly €50 tournament held in Teach O’Hora on Sunday, December 1st, Mossie O’Connell and Bart Furtak shared first and second prizes with Gerry Groarke third and Daniel Kennedy fourth.
A satellite tournament will be held in Teach O’Hora on Sunday afternoon next, December 15th at 4pm for the upcoming Paddy Power Poker Irish Poker Tour €200 buy-in event in Claremorris on December 21st. Buy-in for the satellite is just €15 with rebuys/top-up €10.
Meanwhile, a date for the diary: the annual Christmas Hold Em tournament will be held in the Cill Aodain Hotel on Friday evening, December 27th.
