Minor (A) Football Championship

Ballinrobe and Breaffy played out a thrilling minor championship clash at a balmy Flanagan Park, on Tuesday evening last, with the West Mayo visitors recording a 4-10 to 3-10 victory in the end. Breaffy made a lightning start and netted a goal during the opening seconds of the game courtesy of Sean McNeela, after Daniel Rabbette supplied an inch perfect pass.

The visitors dominated the first half and the blue and white were the first to every breaking ball.

Ballinrobe conceded a second major on 27 minutes. In what was a slick counter offensive move, Breaffy’s McNeela teed-up the scampering Mark Mulchrone and the latter rolled a scrambled finish beyond the reach of Arthur Vaitekunas, much to the delight of the away bench.

Ballinrobe’s Caelan Tansey guided over a free on the stroke of half-time, however, Ballinrobe trailed 2-5 to 0-6 at the change of ends.

Nine minutes into the second period, the visitors were awarded a penalty, with Daniel Rabbette coolness personified from the subsequent spot-kick, and this helped garner a 3-6 to 0-7 lead for the blue and white.

The Robesiders faced a mountain to climb, but their game plan was rejuvenated by netting 2-1 inside a fruitful two-minute period courtesy of Tansey (1-1, 1-0f) and Rossa Burke (1-0).

The momentum was clearly with the local’s and a point from Rory Gilrane on 50 minutes was buttressed by a three-pointer by substitute Rory O’Connell on 51 minutes, and suddenly the maroon and yellow were in front, 3-9 to 3-7.

An enthralling second half continued to offer plenty of drama, with Breaffy’s Riley Cowan and Ballinrobe’s Rossa Burke exchanging points. Leading, 3-10 to 3-8, and with the game entering injury-time, Ballinrobe seemed on course for the victory which would have secured a home tie for the Robesiders in the semi-final. However, against the run of play, Breaffy’s Ross Connolly plundered a goal which shunted the guests into a one-point lead, 4-8 to 3-10.

Ballinrobe went agonisingly close to snatching a score as Ben Place saw his two consecutive efforts hit the upright and the crossbar. Late points by Breaffy’s Connolly and Rabbette helped seal the deal for the visitors.

Ballinrobe will face now Crossmolina Deel Rovers away from home in the Minor (A) championship semi-final. This fixture is set to take place on Tuesday, August 19 (today), at 7pm. Your support for the Robesiders would be appreciated.
