Women’s Connacht Rugby League

The Ballinrobe Rugby Club Women’s team recorded a terrific 22-7 victory away to Galwegians on Sunday week last.

This was Ballinrobe’s opening senior league fixture of the season and was played at a wet and windy Crowley Park. The elements certainly affected the opening half and despite both teams’ best efforts, the sides were scoreless at the break.

Galwegians made a blistering start to the second half and they soon pounced for the opening try of the afternoon, with the subsequent conversion shunting the Galway city outfit into a 7-0 lead.

However, the visitors had the aid of the strong wind during the second half, and with 20 minutes of normal time remaining, Ballinrobe’s Amy Horan scored a crucial try.

The aforementioned Horan was in sparkling form and the dynamic player managed to notch two further five-pointers, and with the deadly Ailise Burke managing to convert one of Horan’s tries, the pendulum had swung in the visitors' favour.

The final act of the tie saw Ballinrobe’s Rachel Kinneavy sprint past the home rearguard and notch a tidy try.

Well done to all involved on what was a memorable victory for Ballinrobe.

Victory for Ballinrobe

On Saturday night, October 26, the Ballinrobe junior men’s rugby team recorded an impressive 25-20 victory away to Monivea in what was a highly competitive Round Three fixture in the Connacht Junior One (B) League.

The opening quarter was nip and tuck, however, the Robesiders made the vital breakthrough on 20 minutes when Tom Staunton bolted for the try line and duly crossed the whitewash.

The South Mayo visitors continued to up the tempo and following some intricate build-up play, Killian McHugh plundered another five-pointer, much to the delight of the away supporters.

However, a gutsy Monivea regrouped and two converted penalties before the interval helped bring the hosts right back into contention, as the Galway side trailed by just four points at the break (12-6).

On the resumption, both sides were full of endeavour, but it was the guests who received the perfect fillip when Liam Lynch powered his way past the home rearguard and duly notched a touchdown. Dylan Keane added the conversion, and when the dead-ball sniper added a penalty shortly after, the Black and White held a commanding 22-6 lead.

Once again the home response was impressive, and a converted try by Monivea reduced the deficit to an attainable nine points.

The game was now really in the melting pot; however, a long-range penalty by Ballinrobe’s Keane would prove vital in the end.

In what was a real dingdong second half, a resilient Monivea managed to pinch another five-pointer, and the subsequent conversion ensured a tense finale to the game as the visitors led 25-20.

Both sides were full of endeavour during the final moments of the joust, but Ballinrobe closed out proceedings impressively and held on to record their first victory of the season.
