Ballinrobe Town maintained their pursuit of table toppers Ballina Town on Wednesday night last at Milebush Park, where the Robesiders recorded a resounding 6-0 victory against Ballyheane. The red and white grabbed the lead after 11 minutes when Peter Staunton found the back of the net after being set-up by J. P. O’Gorman. Seven minutes later, the south Mayo men doubled their advantage. Ruairi Keane won possession, and he found the poaching Staunton and the latter applied a tidy finish. Indeed, Staunton was on form, and he completed his remarkable hat-trick on 24 minutes when he curled home a sublime long-range effort to muster a 3-0 interval lead for the red and white.
Three minutes into the new half, the Town effectively ended the game as a contest. Following some tidy and patient build-up play, possession was collected by O’Gorman and his low drilled shot found the back of the net. Ballina almost pegged a goal back on 11 minutes, however, Gary Dillon’s strike had slightly too much elevation.
Ballinrobe were enjoying their football, and Lloyd Ferguson scored a magnificent individual goal on 36 minutes, when he made an uninterrupted meandering run towards goal before finishing with aplomb. There was still time for another Goal of the Season contender two minutes later, when Ballinrobe’s Damian O’Toole received possession on the right wing and arrowed home a peach of a finish into the top corner of the net.
The postponed round one fixtures will now take place at Milebush Park tomorrow night, Wednesday, which will also be the final night of league action.
