Sinn Féin TD for Mayo Rose Conway-Walsh has criticised communication companies for their failure to reconnect customers over three weeks after Storm Éowyn. “The damage caused by Storm Éowyn was on a worse scale than anything I have witnessed across Mayo and the whole country” Teachta Conway-Walsh said. “I understand that telecoms companies faced great difficulty in managing reconnections. However, phone and internet are vital communication tools and people cannot be left without them".
“I have contacted both Eir to raise this matter with them. Eir have confirmed to me that they believe it will take another two to three weeks to complete all the repairs in Mayo due to the fact that the some of the remediation work will require road closing licences. Eir has also stated that they are issuing 5G mobile broadband as an interim solution to customers while fixed line services are restored. Homes and businesses who wish to avail of this need to contact Eir directly.

Staff and students from Our Ladies Secondary School recently completed a loop walk in memory of past pupil Lauren Padden who sadly passed away 2 years ago. As many people are aware Lauren’s mum Shelley and the team at Cois Cuain recently completed the challenge of 2000km in the month of February in memory of Lauren and to raise money for NorthWest Stop. The whole school community was delighted to accompany Shelley on her walk today and the staff and students thank her for allowing them to walk with her. The school raised €500 for the worthy cause. At the AGM of Ballyglass RNLI, long service awards were presented to two great members of Ballyglass RNLI - Nora Mai Walsh and Eddie Diver received 30 year service awards but as all know locally, both Nora Mai and Eddie were involved long before records began. Eddie was working with the late Paddy Leech and Buddy Valkenburg in the years preceding the arrival of a lifeboat.
Nora Mai needs no introduction to anyone reading this, Nora Mai was involved with the now world renowned Irish Coffee Event, standing for hours on end making Irish Coffee for all who visited the RNLI stand on Heritage Day in August, and again cooking up a storm at the open days in Ballyglass. If Nora Mai got wind of the crew being out on a rescue late in the evening, the word went to Ballyglass to get all into the Western Strands for a bowl of soup and some food, (rumour has it an odd pint was had also).
The chairman spoke of the legacy both Mora Mai and Eddie have left to Ballyglass RNLI and the community. Eddie continues to be involved in fundraising while Nora Mai enjoys a well-earned rest, but she has her daughter Liz and granddaughter Michelle continuing her work at Ballyglass RNLI.
Well done also to Kayley Geraghty on successfully completing her inshore lifeboat (ILB) Tier 1 pass out. This covers launch and recovery, anchoring, veering, towing, policies and procedures, locate and assist, roles and responsibilities, vhf, stability, local knowledge etc.
'Tús maith leath na hoibre' (a good start is half the battle). Support our lifeboats and crews, dedicated to saving lives at sea.
