Fundraising CD

‘Somebody Special’ is a CD which has been recorded recently by Pat McGovern and a group of musician friends from Hollymount and its environs. All proceeds from the sale of the recording will go to promote the great work of The Irish Pilgrimage Trust. The Trust comprises of groups of voluntary carers from all around Ireland, who take children and young adults with additional needs to Lourdes each Easter.

The objective of The Trust is twofold: To promote independence and self confidence amongst its guests by granting them a wonderful, week long holiday of diverse activities; and secondly, to afford parents and carers at home one weeks respite while their loved ones are away.

All carers within The Trust are volunteers, who take a week’s annual leave, pay all their own expenses and fundraise to meet the costs of the guests travelling. The ‘Somebody Special’ CD is a novel way of fundraising and is dedicated to all those involved with the Trust in any way. It is a collection of ten songs and tunes, and has been a labour of love for the musicians who have all given freely of their time and talents to the project. The launch night for this CD will take place on Friday, April 11.

League Two

Ballinrobe Town (B) defeated Crossmolina (B) 5-2 in what was a lively League Two encounter at The Green, on Saturday, March 22. Ballinrobe began the tie in a robust fashion and the hosts edged in front after 11 minutes, when Isaia Caldaras set-up Liam O’Toole and the latter’s swerving strike rustled the back of the net.

However, Crossmolina battled back and just four minutes later the North Mayo side restored parity, courtesy of a tidy close-range finish from Josh Helly McNulty. The end to end nature of the tie continued and just one minute after conceding the equaliser, the Robesiders regained the initiative. A free-kick from Johnny Burke was blocked by the Crossmolina custodian George Gordetskyy, but the poaching Liam O’Toole was on hand to steer the loose ball to the back of the net.

A doughty Crossmolina refused to be deterred and the maroon and white netted a fortuitous levelling goal on 29 minutes, when Shane McKinley’s wind assisted corner-kick bizarrely ended up in the back of Niall O’Malley’s net.

The Ballinrobe half-time pep-talk seemed to have worked wonders and the Robesiders went ahead for the third time in this contest just two minutes into the second half, courtesy of a fine strike from Shane Ryan. Aided by the promptings of Adam Walsh, Rory Walsh, and Caldaras, Greg Keleghan’s troops busily sought a fourth goal and it duly arrived on 68 minutes as Ryan’s superb strike found the top corner of the Crossmolina net. The red and white added the insurance goal on 80 minutes. An in-swinging corner-kick from Caldaras fell invitingly to Rory Walsh and the latter’s close-range header rustled the back of the net.

Community Litter Pick

The community council organised ‘ Community Litter Pick’ last weekend, March 28, 29 and 30, in conjunction with the National ‘Spring into Action’ campaign and they ‘thank’ all who took part, for the benefit of the lovely rural community. The great work carried out by volunteers is evident in most areas, and community members really appreciate the co-operation of everyone to rescue any random litter in order to maintain a litter-free community. Members believe that litter ‘creates more litter’ and frequent litter-picking and vigilance appears to be a deterrent in some areas.
