Players and supporters of S&F United in Jordan's Bar, Foxford where they convened after the hugely successful 'United for Ulick' soccer tournament which was held recently in memory of their former teammate Ulick Bourke who passed away on St Stephen's Day 2022. S&F United welcomed visiting clubs Ballyvary Blue Bombers, Castlebar Celtic, Castlebar Town, Conn Rangers, Manulla and Urlaur United back to Green Road for an over-45s, 7-a-side tournament. All donations made on the day were presented to the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’.
Legendary Mayo footballer and media pundit Martin Carney will be the special guest at next Saturday night’s (December 7) official launch of Moy Davitts GAA Club’s eagerly awaited 50th Anniversary commemorative book. Painstaking research by a team of club volunteers and spearheaded by
editor James Laffey, together with some wonderful interviews and articles contributed by past players and officials, has made for a stunning publication which chronicles not only the history of Moy Davitts GAA Club since its formation but gives a detailed history of Gaelic football in the area pre 1974.Saturday’s ‘Golden Jubilee’ book launch is taking place in The Moy Hotel, Foxford, at 8.30pm to which Moy Davitts GAA is looking forward to welcoming club members, past and present, as well as friends from near and far to this memorable event which will include panel discussions with some of those to feature in the book.
The club also invites you to bring a friend or two who you think may be interested in attending.
Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the launch and refreshments will be served.
The Parents Association of St Joseph’s Secondary School, Foxford has launched a new school lotto, all funds from which are to go towards initiatives and facilities for the school’s student body. Welcoming the initiative – and thanking the Parent’s Association for seeing this school lotto idea through to its launch – the school has expressed its hope that as many people as possible support the lotto.
The first draw will take place on Thursday, December 12 at 8pm and tickets can be purchased at https://www.ourfundraiser.ie/org/stjosephsfoxford.
The Foxford Crafts Fair is to run over the course of three days at Foxford Leisure Centre this coming weekend, from Friday to Sunday, December 6-8.
Friday’s opening times are 12pm to 7pm, on Saturday it will run from 10am to 6pm while on Sunday, the fair will run from 12pm to 6pm.
Adding to the excitement and atmosphere this year is that Midwest Radio will broadcast live from the Foxford Crafts Fair on Saturday morning, December 7.
There will be a huge selection of Irish-made handcrafted gifts available, including woodcraft, jewellery, fauxflowers, glassworks, knitting, pottery, seasonal foods and much, much more.
The Foxford Brass and Reed Band along with the traditional musicians of CCÉ Admiral Brown are to stage their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 15 at 6pm at St Michael's Catholic Church, Foxford. Admission is free but donations will be gratefully accepted. Please come along for a great evening’s entertainment of some of your favourite Christmas music.
Let there be light The ever-popular Coolegrane Lights display will be switched on this coming Friday, December 6 at 7pm. All proceeds collected this year will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Sligo. All are welcome to the switch on. Your support would be much appreciated.
In preparation for Christmas season, the senior choir at St Michael’s Church in Foxford are currently preparing hymns and carols at rehearsals which are taking place after Mass every Sunday, for half an hour. Anybody who would like to join the choir would be very welcome to attend.
Congratulations to the two teams of students from St Joseph’s, Foxford who excelled at last week’s Junior Cycle Science Quiz which was staged at St Mary’s Secondary School, Ballina. The 3rd Year scientists of St Joseph’s competed against other secondary schools from the surrounding area in a quiz that tested students’ knowledge in the subjects and areas of biology, chemistry, physics and earth and space. At the end of it all, the pair of St Joseph’s teams finished in first and third places. In first place was the team of Annie Reynolds, Artemii Brusentsev, Senan Tolan and Milius Miliusis while taking third place was Liam Maloney, Caoimhe Noone, Sebastian Rose and Aóibhe McConnellogue.
Straide and Foxford United was represented on the double when the Mayo League’s U12 team played a pair of friendlies last Saturday week, as both Heath Byrne and Eoghan Jordan made their debuts for the county team. Well done to both players.
S&F United has also congratulated club member Liam Keane Murphy and former youth manager Peter Ryder who represented Ireland at the recent Futnet World Championships in Budapest. It was Liam's first cap for the national team.
Congratulations to Michael McDonagh, Foxford, who won a jackpot of €335 in the Moy Davitts 50/50 draw on Saturday, November 23. And well done too, to Brian Hunt from Bohola who won a tidy jackpot of €397 in the previous week’s Moy Davitts GAA 50-50 draw. Tickets are available in the usual retail outlets and by playing on Moy Davitts GAA club app.
Aoibheann Quinn and Luke Knox are wished all the best in married life after tying the knot at St Michael’s Church in Foxford on Saturday, November 16. Aoibheann is from Pontoon Road and Luke Knox is from Rooskey, Foxford.
A fundraising concert in aid of the Foxford Traditional Weekend has been arranged to take place in The Moy Hotel on Saturday, December 28 whereby following on from his previous sold-out gigs at the venue, the brilliant Sean Keane returns with a five piece band that will include local musicians Stephen and Kevin Doherty and David and Patrick Doocey, and renowned Galway percussionist Jim Higgins.
Tickets are €25 plus booking fee and can be purchased at eventbrite.ie.
The tickets would be an ideal Christmas gift and will go towards helping sustain one of the most popular traditional music festivals of its kind in the country.
A rescheduled table quiz in aid of the Church of Ireland, Foxford will be held in Cruiser’s Bar this coming Friday, December 6. The quiz is aimed at raising funds towards the church’s windows project.
Santa Claus has confirmed he will paying a pre-Christmas visit to Straide on Sunday and Monday, December 8 and 9. A minimum donation of €20 per car will be payable on the gate on arrival but you must have a slot already booked which can be done at https://www.straidecommunity.com/santa.
All funds raised are used to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the Davitt Community Hall and helping to pay off some outstanding debt.

The children of Scoil an Chroí Naofa are busily preparing for their Christmas performances at St Michael’s Church in Foxford.
Junior Infants, Senior Infants, First Class and Second Class will perform in the church on Thursday, December 5 at 12.30pm. The Christmas performance by Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes is on Tuesday, December 17 at 7pm while the Third Class Nativity Play will be staged on Saturday, December 21, again at the church, at 7.30pm, which will also feature the school church choir.
Preparations are nearly complete for the annual ‘Straide Talking’ Christmas gathering in the Davitt Community Hall, Straide, on Sunday, December 15. This year's merry event starts at 11.45 am. The organisers, Straide Community Women’s Group, invite all people from Straide to come along to meet and greet neighbours and enjoy some delicious festive cakes, bakes and tasty bites. Musicians welcome.
