Ballintubber GAA Club weekly lotto

The Ballintubber GAA weekly lotto draw took place at on Sunday night, September 3, and there was no winner of the jackpot.

7, 14, 30 and 32 were the numbers drawn and the consolation prize winners were Mary Kelly, Nora Conroy, Ruaidhri O’Connor, Joe Mahon, Brendan Hughes and Pat Mulroe.

The jackpot for last weekend’s draw on September 10, was €6,400. Tickets are available online through ballintubbergaa.com or local outlets and committee members. Ballintubber and Garrymore to battle

On Sunday next Ballintubber and Garrymore senior clubs face off in Hollymount at 1pm in round 3 of the senior championship. One expects this game to be an extremely close affair as victory is vital to both teams smooth progression to the quarter finals. In the recent league encounter Garrymore beat Ballintubber in extra time. Ballintubber seem battle hardened and durable and indeed it can also be said with certainty - no quarter will be asked or given by the Garrymore men. The game which will be streamed live at 1pm is quite enthralling and a massive attendance is anticipated.

Ballyglass FC lotto

The numbers drawn from the drum on Monday, September 4, were 8, 12, 19 and 25. There was no winner of the jackpot of €3,500 and no match 3 winners. Saturday Night Storytelling

Ballyglass Community Council, supported by funding from Mayo County Council Arts Act Grant, will hold a series of four storytelling evenings this Autumn, as well as two storytelling workshops. The storytelling sessions will begin on September 16, with the wonderful Eddie Lenihan, followed by Liz Weir on October 7. Maria Gillen will be the guest story teller on November 4 and the series will end on December 2 with special guest, Senem Donatan.

The format of each evening will follow that of the “Yarnspinners” clubs in other parts of the country, and will involve stories from the guest storyteller, after which audience members will be invited to tell a story of their own, recite a poem or sing a song. Each event will take place in the Community Centre in Ballyglass. The storytelling evenings will run from 7.30 to 10pm and will cost only €5 per evening. The two workshops on October 7 and November 4 will run from 2pm to 4.15pm at a cost of €10 per session. Baby news

Congratulations to Nichola Hurst and Gary Morris on the birth of their daughter. Baby Éabha was born on July 28. Nichola is originally from Summerhill, Ballyglass but is now living in Manchester. Best wishes to the whole family.

Outstanding exam results

Congratulations have been extended to the students of Coláiste Muire who received their Leaving Certificate results recently. The students in Coláiste Muire always strive for excellence and this was evident in the results they received. All of the students scored over 300 points. 95% of students scored in excess of 350 points, 80% of our students scored over 400 points, 35% of Coláiste Muire students secured in excess of 500 points and the average points achieved by students at the Coláiste was 460 points. All these statistics are above the national averages and the Coláiste students and staff is congratulated on their outstanding achievements.

The late Tomás Lally

The death has occurred of Tomás Lally, R.I.P, Derryveeney, Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo and An Collín, Castlebar. Sincere sympathy is tendered to his relatives, friends, and all who regret his passing. His remains reposed at St Mary’s Funeral Home, Tourmakeady, on the Saturday evening from 6 to 7.15pm. The removal from the family home took place on Sunday morning at 9.30am to arrive at Shannon crematorium for memorial service at 12 noon. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.

Lá Mor na Gaeilge

A very noticeable feature of community life in Tour Mhic Eadaigh in recent years has been the wonderful effort of the local GAA Club to promote the everyday usage of the Irish language. Their efforts have been hugely successful and Lá Mor na Gaeilge is an intrinsic part of that each year. This year’s event will take place at Páirc Naoimh Muire on Saturday, September 16, between 10am and 6pm. There will be a wonderful programme of varied events including, sports, dancing barbecue and ceol agus craic all through the medium of Gaeilge. Hospice coffee evening

There will be a Hospice Coffee evening in Halla Tuar Mhic Eadaigh on Friday, September 15, from 7-9pm. Strong support is anticipated for this most worthy cause.

Congratulations to Thuar Mhic Éadaigh LGFA F16 who recently defeated Moy Davitt’s in the Girls U16B Championship final on a scorline of 6-8 to 1-14.

Wedding Bells

Congratulations and best wishes to Aisling Conway, Killawalla, and Jerry Foley, Co. Cork, who were married in St. Patrick’s Church, Killawalla, on Friday, September 1. The celebrant for the special occasion was Fr Domnick Feehan. Following the nuptial ceremony, the happy couple hosted a gala reception for family and friends at Mulranny Park Hotel. They are wished good health and happiness in their married lives in the years ahead.

Brose Walsh Band tribute

The famous Brose Walsh Band, Ireland’s longest established dance showband will be celebrated with a photographic exhibition, documentary and two concerts on September 15 and 16, in the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar. The band will perform two exclusive concerts along with the premiere of a short documentary film, ‘The Brose Walsh Band, a Mayo Music Legacy’. Tickets are a modest €5. Both evenings will include a drinks reception and some special guest appearances. A retrospective exhibition of photography and archive material documenting the band’s 86 years in entertainment will also be launched in the Foyer on September 15 and will be on show until October 10.

The late Patricia (Phil) Scannell McHale

The death has taken place of Patricia (Phil) Scannell McHale, R.I.P, Epping, Essex, UK and late of Corheens, Breaffy, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Patricia passed away peacefully in her 95th year on August 29. Predeceased by her husband Christy, parents Michael and Mary McHale, baby Bridget, sisters Nora, Delia, Mary and Nellie and brother Thomas she is deeply regretted by her loving family, daughters Maureen (O’Brien), Patricia (Anderson), and Joan (Holland), son Chris (Scannell), brother Sean, sister Kathleen, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, sons-in-law, 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Breaffy and Mayo Gaels will meet in Ballindine on Saturday evening next at 3pm. This match is sure to be a tight and competitive affair as both sides have one previous win and will be most anxious to progress to the quarter finals.

Monasterevin visit

On a recent Saturday, Breaffy GAA and Breaffy LGFA Club hosted 50 U12 boys and U10 girls from Monasterevan GFC, Co. Kildare. The games continued the great friendship between both clubs and were played in the Dome at Bekan. This is always a fantastic experience and is something the kids and parents will long remember. The Breaffy GAA U12 team participated in a great, competitive game

Thanks to all who attended and supported the kids and to the Monasterevan players, coaches and families for making the trip. Huge thanks has also been extended to all who organised the event and to Breaffy Bord na nÓg for supplying the party bags after the game for all of the boys and to Monasterevan GAA for presenting the Kildare/Mayo jersey to the Breaffy club to commemorate the special occasion.

The late Margaret Peggy Doherty

The death has taken place of Margaret Peggy Doherty, R.I.P, Frenchill, Cottage Road, Breaffy, Castlebar, Co Mayo. Peggy passed away on September 5, peacefully at the Claremount Nursing Home, Claremorris. Predeceased by her brother John, her sister Christina Walsh (Foxford) and her brother Noel (UK), she is deeply regretted by her cousins, relatives and many friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Margaret Peggy’s remains reposed in Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home on last Saturday, September 9, from 6 to 7.30pm. The removal of her remains took place from Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar on last Sunday, September 10, to St. Aloysius Church, Breaffy via Frenchill arriving for her Funeral Mass at 11.30am. Hospice coffee evening

Ballyheane Ladies Group is hosting a Bewleys Coffee evening from 4 to 7pm in Ballyheane Community Centre on Monday, September 18. There will be a raffle with some fabulous prizes and all proceeds will be donated to Hospice. The support of the community would be very much appreciated.

Ballyheane/Ballintubber First Responders

Ballyheane/ Ballintubber First Responders are currently taking part in the ‘Blue Token’ Community Fund campaign being run in Tesco Castlebar. A local charity with the most tokens will receive a donation from Tesco Ireland. Running for the next 12 weeks, funds received can help with training equipment to train volunteers and to assist with cardiac/respiratory/stroke incidents within wonderful local communities. ‘Move it or lose it’

The ever popular ‘Move it or lose it’ classes resumed on Monday, September 4, at 10am in Ballyheane Community Centre. Classes are for the Over 55s and cost €8 per class (pay as you go). The late Patricia Quinn, Manulla

The death has taken place of Patricia Quinn, Manulla, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Patricia passed away peacefully, in the loving care of the nurses and staff of Cuan Chaitriona. She is deeply regretted by her brothers Eamonn (Manulla), Tom (Tipperary), sisters Bridie (Castlebar), Gretta (Dublin), nephews, nieces, relatives and friends to whom deep sympathy is extended. Her remains reposed at the Balla Funeral Home, on the Monday evening from 5.30 with removal at 7pm, to St. Cronan’s Church, Balla. Patricia’s Funeral Mass took place on Tuesday morning at 11.30 with the burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Suaimhneas agus síochán síoraí di i measc na nAingeal.

A waste management workshop took place recently in Balla Community Centre. It was a very informative evening. Thank you to Sharon Cameron Environmental officer with Mayo County Council and to Balla GAA for organising the event.

Annual Clogher draw

Tickets are now available for the annual Clogher Community Fundraising Raffle which will take place on Saturday, September 30 in the Drum Inn, Clogher. Funds are required each year to maintain the Local Employment Scheme and also to maintain the facilities, community hall, heritage cottage, bog walks etc. Tickets are priced at €5 or a book of 5 for €20 and are available locally. The following are the sponsored prizes : 1st prize voucher for €300 for D&P School of Motoring, 2nd prize voucher for €200 for Mulroy’s Filling Station, Castlebar, 3rd prize voucher for €200 for Belcarra Bouncing Castles , 4th prize voucher for €200 for Aurivo, 5th prize, Pamper hamper plus voucher total value €100 for Lush Hair Therapy, Castlebar.

Active Age Group

Clogher Active Age Group meets up every Wednesday morning at 11am in the Clogher Community Centre. All senior citizens across the region are very welcome to attend the enjoyable weekly sessions.

Clogher card results

The card winners in Clogher on September 1 were; 1st Jim Conroy and Tommy Lyons, 2nd Martin Moran and Tom Fitzpatrick, 3rd Derek Quinn and Tom Fahy. Best of last ten went to Margaret Mannion and Majella Corbett. The games continue every Friday night at 9pm.

Volunteers needed

Mayo Abbey

Services at Mayo Abbey Centre

Mayo Abbey Centre offer a number of services to the community including ; Meals delivery service; weekly Tuesday lunch for active age at Centre; boarding pass printouts; support provided for individuals looking to start their own business; compiling of local notes; wide range of training programmes provided; Thursday morning coffee and chat; free computer and phone support for beginners; hot desk spaces with fibre broadband connection available; facilities available to attend a virtual meeting or interview; computers can be provided or users can bring their own; printing, photocopying and laminating services and much more.

The also provide a regular Local Link bus service from the parish community to Castlebar and it departs daily from the Centre (Tuesday – Saturday). For further details contact Mayo Abbey Centre 094 936 5987 or Local Link 094 900 5150.

Cookery course

A free full time professional cookery course is starting soon in Mayo Abbey Centre. The course is run in conjunction with MSLETB. Uniform, books and all course materials are provided. Participants also receive training in HACCP, manual handling and barista. You do not have to be in receipt of a social welfare payment to apply. Eligible participants who are in receipt of a social welfare payment may be eligible for a training allowance in lieu. Learn about St Gobnait and the bees

Join Irish Folklife curator Tiernan Gaffney at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Tur lough Park, Castlebar, for a special Culture Night talk at 6.30pm on Friday, 22 September, exploring the life and folklore associated with St Gobnait, Patron Saint of Bees and Iron Workers. Learn about the miracles, places and museum objects associated with this interesting medieval saint and the folk history of bees in everyday life. Admission is free. Booking required. Computer and Business Courses

The Further Education Centre, Swinford is offering computer and business courses to people over 21 in receipt of social welfare. If you fit that category why not consider joining one of these courses? The courses are full time and all the course materials, including laptops are provided.
