The sharp rise in eviction notices in Mayo has been highlighted.

Eviction notices issued in Mayo have jumped by 61% in the space of a year, new figures from the Residential Tenancies Board recently revealed.

A total of 134 notices of termination were issued in the county in the final quarter of 2025, compared to 83 in the same period in 2024.

Independent councillor Harry Barrett raised the situation at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.

“It’s expected to rise again in the next quarter,” Cllr Barrett commented.

He said this comes against the backdrop of a lack of affordable housing in Mayo and Castlebar.

“It’s leading to people ending up homeless through no fault of their own. Through being unable to pay their rent, through being unable to find available HAP properties or available rental properties in this constituency here. We have to put more pressure on to promote affordable schemes. It’s just going to get worse. It’s horrendous out there in terms of finding affordable rental properties,” Cllr Barrett stated.

He said the Inflation and the fuel crisis is piling further pressure on families.

“A lot of working families in this constituency are left asking, ‘Working hard, where does it get you?’ Where does it get you when your disposable income is being whittled down on a constant basis,” said Cllr Barrett.

The Government approved new policies which aimed to strengthen rent controls and tenancy protections for new tenancies created from March 1. However, eviction notices have spiked since their introduction. “We have to appeal to Government, appeal to the Minister for Housing, to repeal these ridiculous rental rules that seem to be accelerating the increase in evictions in this area. It’s not working,” he added.
