Mayo's only film festival for young people takes place next weekend

There are a wide range of films for young people at the festival.

Mayo’s only film festival for young people is taking place at Ballina Arts Centre this weekend.

The annual Embers Festival is a fun-filled, three-day celebration of films for children, teenagers, and young people. Taking place this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 18, 19 and 20, the programme is designed to appeal to all ages, from toddlers to teens.

The 2024 festival offering includes a mix of international and Irish-made films from shorts to animation, live-action to documentary. This year’s screenings will include Disney’s moving and beautifully crafted Wall-E as well as a selection of short films in a wide variety of animation styles for children aged eight and up.

There will also be a showing of the boisterous Lilo and Stich in addition to a gripping and beautifully animated retelling of the beloved book Kensuke’s Kingdom. There is also a screening of the popular film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda, as well as a Ukrainian language screening of the Irish animation Puffin Rock and the New Friends, with its message of courage and friendship. Fans of stop-gap animation will enjoy The Shell with Shoes On, and the festival will conclude with the iconic Edward Scissorhands

With events for schools, free shows for local groups, and an animation workshop, there really will be something to appeal to any young person interested in film. Tickets for screenings are only €5, and popcorn will be available in the theatre.

A full list of screen-times is available on the website, or from the box office on 096-73593. Ballina Arts Centre would like to thank Creative Ireland and Creative Communities Mayo for their support of the Embers Film Festival which is presented in association with Access Cinema.
