A showcase of brilliant youthful art

The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar has been transformed into a kaleidoscope of youthful vision as Davitt College celebrates a historic milestone: its first-ever large-scale external exhibition.
Featuring over 200 works from a diverse body of students, the showcase has immediately become a 'must-see' for the local community, marking a significant chapter in the school’s artistic history.
From the moment visitors enter the Linenhall, they are greeted by a captivating explosion of colour. The exhibition demonstrates a sophisticated range of mediums that go far beyond the standard classroom portfolio. The collection includes:
Sculpture and Ceramics: Tactile clay works and intricate mask-making.
Fine Art: Detailed pencil sketches and expressive paintings.
Modern Design: Innovative interior design concepts and professional-grade photography.
Visitors to the gallery have been quick to praise the output, with many noting that the work is "inspiring, uplifting, and of a very high standard for post-primary level".
The opening was a heartfelt gathering of the Davitt College community. Art student Mischa Ginnelly spoke eloquently on behalf of her peers, highlighting the journey from blank canvas to gallery wall. The students also received a boost of inspiration from past pupil and established artist Bryan Duffy, who returned to share words of wisdom on pursuing a life in the creative arts.
The success of this landmark event was a collaborative effort. Art teachers Sile Hughes and Joanne Hopkins extended their sincere gratitude to Deirdre Melvin for providing the prestigious gallery space, and to George Gallagher, whose expertise in hanging the show ensured each piece was showcased to its full potential. The vibrant atmosphere of the event was expertly captured by photographer Alison Laredo.
The start of a new tradition for the Art Department at Davitt College, this exhibition is more than just a one-off event, it is a statement of intent.
"We are so incredibly proud of what our students have produced," said Joanne Hopkins. "To see their work in a professional setting like the Linenhall is a dream come true for them and for us. We truly hope this will be the start of an annual exhibition that the whole of Castlebar can look forward to."
The Davitt College exhibition is currently running at the Linenhall Arts Centre. Members of the public are encouraged to visit and experience the extraordinary talent of Mayo’s next generation of artists.
