The final lecture in Westport Civic Trust’s programme for the year is by Dr Fiona White of ATU Castlebar campus. It takes place in the Walnut Suite in the Plaza Hotel on Tuesday, April 16, at 8pm. Fiona teaches and researches in the Built and Heritage Studies programme in ATU.
The Moore family of Moore Hall contributed significantly to the political, social and cultural history of the local region and to wider national events. They certainly lived up to their family motto: “He Who Proceeds With Courage Will Never Fail”. The last generation of the Moores included both the novelist George Augustus and his brother Maurice, the distinguished British soldier and Irish statesman. They demonstrated that the Moores in each generation were at the front of important humanitarian, literary, political and military change. This talk examines the brothers' turbulent relationship and differing opinions, especially when it came to Ireland's future.
