Irish swimmers progress from heats in European Aquatics Championships

Daniel Wiffen, Mona McSharry and Ellie McCartney are among those to progress from their heats at the European Aquatics Championships.

Wiffen finished third to qualify for the men's 800-metres freestyle final on Wednesday.

Mona McSharry finished second-fastest overall in the women's 100-metres breaststroke heats this morning. She progresses to tonight's semi-finals, as does Ellie McCartney.

Meanwhile, John Shortt came fourth in his heat in the men's 200-metres backstroke, advancing to tonight's semi-finals.

Ellen Walshe won her heat in the 50-metres butterfly this morning, but her time of 26.62 seconds was not enough to qualify for the semis.

Alana Burns-Atkin finished eighth, while Rosalie Phelan came 10th in Heat 3.

Evan Bailey and Matthew Hamilton missed out on the semi-finals of the men's 100-metres freestyle.

Daniel Wiffen, Nathan Wiffen, and Liam Custer will all compete in the Men's 800m freestyle.

This evening, Jack Kelly could win Ireland's first medal of the Championships. He goes in the 100-metres breaststroke final just before 5:50pm.
