Softball set to go Wild in Mayo

Mayo's new softball team, Mayo Madres, are in action this Saturday in Swinford Amenity Park.

Mayo has a fairly new sport being played on the local fields – softball!

Softball is similar to rounders and Mayo’s first ever co-ed, adult softball team started playing in 2024, the Mayo Madres, and they competed last Saturday in “The Galway Blitz” with eight teams competing in multiple games throughout the day.

The Mayo Madres were undefeated throughout the day and won the cup! Current member count is 23, and at their very first tournament last year, “The Gobbler”, in the University of Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome, they were amazing and came away with the third place in the plate!

In the first tournament of the 2025 season, “The Brian Walshe Cup” (a tournament in the Irish softball calendar), held in Dublin, launches the summer softball season with ten-plus teams competing for the coveted Cup, Bowl and Plate. They ended up in the middle of the pack against very seasoned teams, still not bad for a newly organised team!

The next big day for this amazing team, will be the first leg of “The Wild Atlantic League”. It will be played here in Mayo at the Swinford Amenity Park this Saturday, June 28. This competition pits various teams from the Softball Connacht Munster league. The winner of The Wild Atlantic League will meet the winners of the Belfast League and the Dublin League bringing three good teams together to fight for a chance to play in the European Super Cup in 2027 in Berlin.

Come out and support these new heroes of Mayo sports at the Swinford Amenity Park! For more information contact Michelle Grover 087-2700093 or find them on Facebook: Mayo Softball. New members are always welcome. Training is on Saturdays from 1pm to 3pm at Swinford Amenity Park.
