Ballina man stars as he wins Munster Premier Open title

Ballina's badminton star Jack O'Brien claimed the Munster Premier Open title.

Ballina’s Jack O’Brien produced one of his finest tournament performances to claim the men’s singles title at the Munster Premier Open in Waterford last weekend.

The prestigious competition, staged at the SETU Arena, attracted many of Ireland’s leading badminton players.

O’Brien, currently ranked number two in the Irish senior men’s singles rankings, successfully negotiated Saturday’s early rounds, recording notable victories over Jason Carr and Yuwen Nah to book his place in Sunday’s semi-finals.

There he faced a stern test against Dharan Kumar Rajulapati in an absorbing contest that lasted well over an hour.

O’Brien took the opening game 21-15 before Rajulapati responded to edge a closely fought second game 21-19.

The deciding game was a tense, point-for-point battle. O’Brien demonstrated excellent tactical awareness, combining powerful attacking play with some superb touches at the net to establish a 20-16 advantage and earn four match points.

Rajulapati refused to surrender and fought back to reduce the deficit to 20-19. However, O’Brien would not be denied, sealing a memorable victory with a brilliant smash down the line.

In the final, the Ballina man faced Dharan’s highly promising younger brother, Charan Deep Rajulapati.

Charan made the stronger start and had O’Brien in considerable difficulty when opening a 14-8 lead in the first game. Jack responded superbly, increasing the pace and reeling off six consecutive points to draw level.

The remainder of the game was played point for point, with O’Brien saving one game point before eventually taking it 22-20.

The second game was equally competitive in its early stages, with the players locked together at 15-15. O’Brien then produced another outstanding spell of badminton, taking control of the exchanges and closing out the game 21-15 to secure the Munster Premier Open title.

O’Brien has delivered several excellent performances over the past year, despite having his progress disrupted by injury. However, this Waterford success ranks among his best tournament displays and further strengthens his standing as one of Ireland’s foremost senior badminton players.
