Senior Ireland call-up for Mayo club's former youth player

A footballer who trained with a Mayo soccer club at underage level has been called up to the Republic of Ireland Senior Men’s Squad.
Owen Elding, who trained a youth player with Manulla and also played with the Mayo League representative sides, has been named as part of Heimir Hallgrímsson’s 26-man squad for the upcoming Nations League games.
Following his days with the Blues, Elding embarked on a professional career that seen him light up the League of Ireland with Sligo Rovers before moving to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.
Elding had been called up previously as part of Ireland’s summer friendly series against Grenada, Qatar, and Canada but did not make an appearance. However, he has retained his place in the squad.
With 6 goals in 21 appearances for Hibs, Elding, an attacker, has caught the eye of the Ireland Head Coach and at just 20-years-old could play a major role in the national team’s future. He is considered a bright footballing talent whose career is only getting started.
Owen’s father Anthony was also a professional footballer and has transitioned into coaching since retiring and recently had a role in the academy with Mayo FC.
Elding is not the only player in the Ireland squad with links to Mayo. Striker Tom Cannon, who plays his club football with Sheffield United, has relatives in Balla and in Louisburgh.
