A Mayo man is to pit himself against the best javelin throwers in Europe this weekend.

The 2026 European Throwing Cup takes place in Nicosia, Cyprus this Saturday and Sunday and among the lineup for the senior men’s javelin is Conor Cusack from Ballinrobe.

Cusack, a member of Lake District AC, has moved to the senior grade having only turned 24 last Tuesday, making him one of the youngest throwers in the 21 strong field. In fact, he’s a full 16 years younger than the oldest competitor, Spain’s Odei Quijera.

The field also includes reigning European U23 champion Artur Felfner from Ukraine, who has ownership of a lifetime best with 84.32m, and Nick Thumm who claimed gold in the European U23 Throwing Cup last year.

Conor Cusack has a lifetime best of 75.42m.

Finishing third behind Thumm in 2025 was another Lake District thrower, Oisin Joyce, the 2024 World U20 bronze medallist, but Joyce is not competing in Cyprus.

His clubmate Conor Cusack’s current personal best is 75.42m and he will be looking to improve on that this weekend.

Portugal’s Leandro Ramos has the best PB of the entire senior men’s lineup having previously thrown 84.78m.
