The GAA world lost a legend over the weekend, as two-time All-Ireland winning manager John O'Mahony passed away at the age of 71.

Kilmovee native O'Mahony, former manager of Connacht sides Mayo, Galway and Leitrim, is well remembered for guiding the Tribesmen to two All-Ireland football titles in 1998 and 2001.

The former Fine Gael politician, who served as a Senator and TD for the Mayo constituency between 2007 and 2016, also brought success during his time in charge of Leitrim - winning their second-ever Connacht Championship in 1994.

With Mayo, O'Mahony won three Connacht titles and guided the Green and Red to its first All-Ireland final in 38 years during his two tenures in charge (1987-1991 & 2006-2010) of his native county.

Settled in Ballaghaderreen, as a player, John claimed numerous titles with his local club and served as Ballaghaderreen GAA's secretary, PRO and vice-chairman over a period of 40 years.

Tributes have been pouring in since his death, with Mayo GAA and Galway GAA among those leading the way to honour the GAA great.

Mayo GAA Cathaoirleach Seamus Tuohy described the late O'Mahony as a "true gentleman", while Connacht GAA president Vicent Neary acknowledged his enormous contribution to the association in the province.

On Sunday, people around the west paid their respects during O'Mahony's journey to his Ballaghaderreen home. The town of Dunmore, and the home of Galway club Dunmore MacHales, were among those to give O'Mahony a guard of honour as the hearse drove through the town.

O'Mahony will be greatly missed and remembered with love by his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, brothers, extended family, the GAA community and his many colleagues and friends.
