Top GAA award for Mayo officer

Mayo GAA's public relations officer John Walker is among this year's MacNamee Awards.
Croke Park is to recognise one of Mayo GAA’s top officers at this year’s MacNamee Awards.
The 2023 winners of the association’s annual National Communication and Media Awards have been announced and among the recipients is John Walker who will collect the Digital Impact Award on behalf of Mayo GAA.
The GAA MacNamee Awards recognise excellence in the area of GAA communications and media coverage at local and national level.
John Walker, who is Mayo County Board’s PRO, has overseen an impressive digital strategy which has grown Mayo GAA into one of the largest county social media footprints in the country, with its online traffic surging by 60% thanks to Walker's passion and dedication to capturing and sharing powerful moments from matches across multiple platforms.
In a statement, the awards committee added that the work in redesigning the Mayo GAA website and transforming Mayo GAA TV, with clips reaching millions of viewers, “exemplifies commitment to innovation” and that John has enabled Mayo GAA to become a “leader in digital GAA storytelling”.
The statement does on to describe John Walker as an “outstanding team leader” and “one of the most dedicated and passionate GAA administrators in the country”.
Living in Cill Ghallagáin in the North Mayo Gaeltacht, just to attend a county board meeting requires a three hour round trip while he will also attend a minimum of five games every week, taking photographs and video for sharing on Mayo GAA’s social channels. That’s not to factor in his other role as one of the leading referees in the county.
The award is to be presented at a gala banquet in Croke Park.
