A team of engineers are currently engaged at the location of the proposed new Mayo GAA Centre of Excellence.

The site survey investigation firm is into its second week of exploratory works just outside the village of Bohola. Soil quality and drainage capacity are among a number of evaluations taking place, with Mayo County Board expecting to receive the full findings by Friday, June 13.

“When the report comes back to Coiste Bainistí, we’ll discuss that and depending on the outcome and recommendations contained within the report, it will then be brought to the county board for a full discussion and ultimately a decision in relation to the project,” said vice-chair Michael Diskin, adding that Mayo GAA officials held an on-site visit with the engineers and also a meeting with local farmers to explain the work involved.

Diskin described as “positive” the fact this work had started but cautioned that with such a “huge amount of preliminary work involved”, the project was only at a very early stage.

“I cannot predict what is going to happen in Bohola but my absolute hope would be that all of the reports are extremely positive and it is an eminently suitable site for what we would require.”
