Shamrocks girls celebrate sweet county success

The under-13 footballers of Kilmovee Shamrocks LGFA after their title winning victory over Tourmakeady.

Kilmovee Shamrocks have been celebrating winning a Mayo LGFA underage title following a trip to the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence on October Bank Holiday weekend. Kilmovee’s U13 girls faced Tourmakeady in the Division 4 Cup Final and with both sides having a 100 per cent record coming into the game, it promised to be a close encounter.

Sure enough, the first-half was particularly close, with the sides level at half-time, Kilmovee 1-4 to Tourmakeady’s 2-01.

Jennifer Connor had scored Kilmovee's only goal of the half but the Shamrocks came out a different team after the break, scoring 1-5 without reply, the goal coming from Katie Cummins with five minutes to go, to put the match out of reach. The chasers from West Mayo got a late consolation point but it was too little too late, with Kilmovee Shamrocks winning by seven points, 2-9 to 2-2.

There were some fine performances all over the field, with the backline, led by the excellent Ella-Mai Hunt at centre-back, keeping the usually prolific Tourmakeady attack well marshalled. The forwards caused problems for the Tourmakeady defence throughout the game, however, captain Kaylan McHugh produced a brilliant display at midfield, covering every blade of grass, whilst kicking four great points in the process, earning her the well-deserved Player of the Match award.

The girls received a hero’s welcome on their arrival back home, where the bonfires were lit and the celebrations ensued.
