Mayo GAA great Andy Moran has a new role in inter-county football following an announcement on Thursday.

It has been confirmed that Moran will join Gabriel Bannigan's backroom team with the Monaghan senior men's footballers ahead of the new campaign.

The Ballaghaderreen native is joined by John McElhone and Damien Freeman in the backroom setup after Bannigan was announced as the new Monaghan manager yesterday.

Moran, who was most recently in charge of Leitrim for three years, guided the county to promotion from Division 4 this year before departing his role in July.

The ex-Mayo forward also took charge of Leitrim's under-20 team where they defeated his native county in this year's Connacht Championship.

The 40-year-old, who won eight Connacht senior titles as an inter-county player, made over 180 appearances for Mayo.
