Allianz NHL Division 3A – Round 3

Mayo 2-17

Cavan 1-13

Mayo have one foot in the Division 3A final after a strong second half saw them run out seven point winners over Cavan in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park this afternoon.

Man of the match Liam Lavin scored 1-3, with his goal on 48 minutes proving a killer blow to Cavan’s hopes after the Breffni County enjoyed a bright start to the second half. Mayo join Sligo at the top of the table with three league wins from three, and a point from their match against Louth in two weeks’ time will guarantee them a spot in the league final.

Michael Farrell found the net inside 50 seconds for the hosts, with two frees from Cormac Phillips and a point each from Lavin and Daniel Huane seeing Mayo open up a 1-4 to 0-1 lead inside ten minutes.

Cavan had the lions share of the ball for the remainder of the half, hitting six of the next nine scores through Liam O’Brien, Nicholas Kenny and Diarmaid Carney but Mayo kept the board ticking over through Lavin, Huane and two injury time points from Adrian Phillips to see Mayo lead 1-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Nicholas Kenny struck 1-1 early in the second half, followed up by a score from Jack McGuinness to bring Cavan back to within a point but Lavin fired back with a green flag of his own. Mayo outscored Cavan 0-6 to 0-1 over the next ten minutes through Cormac and Adrian Phillips, Eoin Delaney and Sean Kenny to see Mayo lead 2-16 to 1-10 on 58 minutes.

O’Brien and Nicholas Kenny, who finished with 1-6, added scores late on for the visitors while Cormac Phillips sent over his fourth free in injury time to see out a comfortable afternoon in the end for Mayo.
