Mayo girls are crowned Galway champions
The Westport squad with the trophy after Friday night's victory over Kinvara in the Galway junior 'C' camogie final.
When captain and player of the match Ava Lambert raised the Galway Junior ‘C’ Cup to rapturous cheers and applause from family, friends and supporters last Friday evening, it was a moment that will live long in the memory of everyone associated with Westport Camogie Club. On a wet and blustery night at Killimor GAA Grounds, a remarkable chapter was written in the club’s short but rapidly growing history at adult grade.
Having fallen agonisingly short at the semi-final stage in both 2023 and 2024, there was a quiet determination within the group to go one step further in 2025. Every training session, every match and every challenge along the way became another step toward achieving that ultimate goal. Not only did they reach the final, but from start to finish they delivered a masterclass performance worthy of champions.
And when the final whistle sounded, the sense of achievement among players and management was palpable. Not only had Westport won their first Junior ‘C’ final, they had done so in emphatic fashion, delivering a ruthless performance that will be remembered as one of complete dominance.
Despite the challenging conditions, Westport adapted quickly, raising the green flag twice in the opening minutes, and truth be told, this well-organised and determined outfit never looked back. Kinvara battled bravely but were simply overwhelmed by the sheer intensity and skill level of the Westport players. In a superb display of camogie, Westport dominated possession, dictated the tempo from start to finish and emerged as convincing and thoroughly deserving winners. If ever there was a complete performance, this was it.
In torrential rain and testing conditions, Westport showcased their skill, resilience and an unwavering will to win – qualities that epitomise everything good about this group. They were disciplined and relentless, executing their game plan to perfection. Every tackle, every block and every score was cheered loudly from the sideline as supporters urged their team to the finish line.
When the final whistle blew, the celebrations began with cheers echoing around the ground. The joy and emotion were evident, years of hard work and perseverance had finally paid off. It was a proud moment for the players, management and the travelling supporters.
This victory marks another major milestone in the development of Westport Camogie. Since the club first fielded at adult grade in 2020, the progress has been extraordinary. In 2021, the same group of players, alongside their management team, captured the a Junior 12-a-side title, announcing their arrival on the adult scene. To now be competing and winning at 15-a-side level shows just how far the club has come in a few short years. This group can reflect with immense pride on a historic achievement, a day when everything came together, when years of effort and belief were rewarded and when Westport firmly announced themselves as a force to be reckoned with.
