Mayo GAA have released a statement in response to the criticism of the manner in which Kevin McStay was let go from his role as manager of the Mayo senior footballers.

The statement, read by vice-chairman Michael Diskin in the absence of Seamus Tuohy, said: "In light of the recent statement regarding the departure of Kevin McStay and his management team from their roles with the Mayo senior football team, Mayo GAA wishes to provide further context and express our sincere reflections.

"Firstly, we would like to state clearly and unreservedly, that it was never the intention of the executive to cause offence or upset to Kevin, his management team, their families or the wider GAA community.

"The manner or tone of the original communication did not adequately reflect the deep respect and appreciation we hold for Kevin. For this we offer our heartfelt apologies.

"Kevin McStay’s commitment to Mayo GAA has been nothing short of exemplary. Since making his debut for Mayo at underage level, he has given decades of dedicated service both on and off the pitch. His leadership of the Mayo senior football team brought pride to the county and huge delight with a national title two years ago.

"Kevin and his management team have served the county with integrity, passion and unwavering commitment. We are immensely grateful for their efforts and for the standards they uphold.

"We wish them all well and every success in the future in every new chapter they pursue.

"As we look ahead, Mayo GAA is committed to building on the foundations laid and embark on a new era for our county senior football team.

"The process to appoint a new management team is underway, and we are focused on ensuring it reflects the ambitions and values of Mayo football."
