Mayo GAA officials have change of heart on club finals

The finals of the Mayo senior and intermediate football championships are now to be played as a double-header on Sunday, October 19.

The finals of the Mayo senior and intermediate football championships are now to be played on the same day, the Western People has learnt.

After initially deciding to stage the matches separately, Mayo GAA’s Competition Control Committee (CCC) has instead decided upon a double-header at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park in Castlebar on Sunday, October 19. The Egan Jewellers Mayo IFC Final will throw-in at 2pm followed by the Connacht Gold Mayo SFC Final at 4pm.

If either final is level at the end of normal time, a replay will be fixed for Saturday, October 25.

Mayo County Board had previously confirmed the intermediate final for Saturday, October 18 and the senior final for the following day, but the new arrangement is likely to please spectators who will now get to see the county’s two biggest club games back to back.

The finalists will be confirmed this weekend, with both senior semi-finals taking place on Saturday and the intermediate semi-finals going ahead on Sunday.

Meanwhile, this season’s Treanlaur Catering Mayo Junior ‘A’ and ‘B’ county finals will also form a double-header. They will be played at MacHale Park on Sunday, October 26, with the ‘B’ final at 1pm followed by the ‘A’ at 3pm.
