A Mayo team that more resembled what might be expected to line out in next Sunday’s NFL Division 1 opener against Galway recorded a relatively comfortable win against Clare in a senior football challenge played at Flanagan Park, Ballinrobe on Friday night.
The entire starting 15, none of whom would start Sunday’s FBD Connacht SFL Final, was comprised of players with senior championship experience. The Green and Red overcame their Banner visitors by six points, 0-21 to 2-09.
Paul Towey and Bob Tuohy scored the bulk of Mayo’s points in a first-half that ended 0-10 to 1-in favour of the hosts . Goalkeeper Rob Hennelly kicked a couple of two-pointers from placed balls in the second-half while Fergal Boland was sprung from the bench, having returned from his All-Ireland Club hurling campaign with Tooreen.
Boland whipped a goal chance over the bar while fellow substitute, 18-year-old Kobe McDonald, struck a point also.
