Mayo club loses second appeal over championship exit

It remains to be seen whether Hollymount-Carramore GAA Club will bring their appeal against their exit from the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship all the way to Croke Park.

Hollymount-Carramore’s attempt to be reinstated into the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship has failed for a second time, after Connacht GAA last night upheld the decision of Mayo County Board’s hearings committee that a controversial score awarded as two points in their group match with Kilmaine “was recorded correctly in accordance with rule 7.5 n (ii).”

Video footage of the score has clearly shown that the ball was kicked from inside the arc and so should have been registered as one point.

The rulebook states that an objection or counter-objection may only be upheld if it is proven that a score allowed was either recorded or incorrectly recorded by the referee. The issue, however, appears to that since the referee both signalled and recorded the score in question as two points, no error is deemed to have taken place.

The consequence of the game between Hollymount-Carramore and Kilmaine ending in a draw was that Kilmaine advanced to the championship quarter-finals at Hollymount-Carramore’s expense because of a superior scoring difference.

It remains to be seen whether Hollymount-Carramore will bring their case to the GAA’s Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA) but as it stands, Kilmaine will travel to play Kilmeena next Saturday in the Egan Jewellers Mayo IFC quarter-final with the match at St Brendan’s Park due to throw-in at 3pm.
