Breaffy kicked seven two-pointers, with the pick of the orange flags an audacious effort from Aidan O’Shea from the sideline, as they got off to a brilliant start in the senior championship with a ten-point win over Ballagh’.
A nip and tuck affair in ‘The Saucer’ went the way of the home side. Key scores for Mark Concannon’s outfit were a first half goal by Matthew Morris and a pair of two-pointers by Darren Coen in the second half.
The visitors outscored Ballinrobe 0-10 to 1-2 in the second half as Ballyhaunis’ path back to senior football got off to a positive start. Eamon Phillips bagged the major for the east Mayo men.
Mitchels kept inter-county duo Tommy Conroy and Tom Lydon under wraps at a wet and windy Josie Munnelly Park as Mitchels, with Mayo minor Ben Joyce impressing in the middle, secured a surprise win.
Ethan Convey kicked 1-3 as intermediate dark horses Ardnaree Sarsfields maintained their solid home form with a win over Kilmaine.
Goals from Sean Dever and Peter Gallagher helped Achill bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Killala. A gutsy second half defensive display held off a late Northern Gaels rally.
Ardagh were almost caught by a second half comeback from Ballycroy, with goals coming from Rory Conway and Stephen Grealis. The visitors held on for the win however, with Mayo minor Tony Carey getting 1-8.
Alan Gilmartin’s late goal for Bonni’ was the icing on the cake of a big win over Shrule/Glencorrib.
Eastern Gaels returned to winning ways as last year’s runners-up recorded a facile win in Brickens over Ballycastle.
Tourmakeady made it two wins from two in the championship with an excellent victory away in Swinford.
