Claremorris will go into their home quarter-final with three wins from wins in the group stage after defeating Charlestown Sarsfields. The east Mayo side, who defeated Kilmeena a fortnight ago, have paid the price for the heavy defeat to Westport in the opening and now face a relegation battle. The reason being......
Kilmeena caused the shock of the day, and arguably the championship to date, as they defeated neighbours Westport to not only win their first ever game in senior champoinship but a place in the senior championship for next season.
Despite losing their last two games, Westport secure second place in Group 1 and a quarter-final spot due to their superior points difference.
Ballina Stephenites were pushed all the way by Balla before signing off on the championship with a win. Balla now enter the relegation playoffs.
Friday night saw the other game in Group 2 played, with Garrymore defying the odds again to beat Castlebar Mitchels and secure a home quarter-final.
In a real game of two halves, Kiltane, who had already secured a home quarter-final, overturned a nine-point deficit at half-time to record a two-point win over local rivals Cill Chomáin, who must now navigate a relegation playoff.
Lahardane, who had already guaranteed safety, saw their slim chances of making the quarter-finals ended by Moy Davitts, who made it three wins from three to secure a home quarter-final.
Joining Moy Davitts in the last eight is Davitts, who scores two goals in each half to see off Louisburgh. The west Mayo side face a relegation battle for the second year running.
Islaneady secured a quarter-final place at the expense of Kilmaine as the west Mayo side held off a late rally from Kilmaine to advance.
With Ardnaree guaranteed a home quarter-final and Kiltimagh hovering over the relegation trapdoor, both sides had little on the line other than pride but Ardnaree ensured they remain unbeaten with a late points to ensure a share of the spoils.
