Former Mayo senior manager John Maughan is the only nominee for the role as the new county under-20 football manager.

Local media reports over the weekend said that the Crossmolina native was the only name put forward and the Western People understands that this is indeed the case.

Maughan, who is currently part of his home club’s backroom team, will now proceed to the interview stage and should that go well, and the County Board do not add their own candidate, then Maughan will in likelihood be the new under-20 manager.

As well as Mayo, Maughan is a former senior manager of Clare, Fermanagh, Roscommon and most recently Offaly, joining Mickey Moran and Mick O’Dwyer as one of three men to manage five different counties. He led Clare to the 1992 Munster title and Mayo to four Connacht titles and three All-Ireland finals.

Meanwhile, there is little movement on the under-17 (minor) management situation, although the Western People understands that Eamonn ‘Benji’ Smith (Castlebar) and Eoin Sweeney (Ballycroy), who are part of the county’s under-16 side, are likely to be putting their names forward.
