A goal and eight points from the boot of Leo Ó Cionaoith helped Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca to claim the Division 2 Boys title with a seven points win over Brackloon National School in an entertaining final at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park last Tuesday.
The winners made the brighter start and moved two points clear in the opening half, with Leo Ó Cionaoith responsible for both scores, one of them from a free.
Brackloon responded impressively however and took a grip on matters as points from Kevin Moran, DJ Bourke (two frees), Eoin Ó Raghallaigh and Conor O’Regan helped them into a 0-5 to 0-3 lead by the 18th minute.
But the crucial score before half-time went the way of the Gaelscoil, with Leo Ó Cionaoith finding the net to edge his side 1-3 to 0-5 in front at the interval.
Brackloon hit back five minutes after the restart when Kevin Moran blasted to the net, a score that put the Red and Black ahead by 1-6 to 1-3.
Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca then produced the decisive spell of the game. Liam Mac Tomáis struck for a goal on 26 minutes, and that was followed by seven unanswered points from Leo Ó Cionaoith, five, with three frees included, Arthur Ó Mórdha and Harry Ó Maolchaoin.
Brackloon were not finished and reduced the gap on 38 minutes when DJ Bourke’s swerving free deceived everyone on its way to the net.
Even so, Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca finished the stronger and sealed the title when Tom Mac Oscair added a late goal to cap an accomplished display.
