Ladies share the spoils after hectic finish away to Cavan

Sinead Walsh found the net for Mayo in the second half

Cavan 1-13

Mayo 1-13

The Mayo Ladies began their quest to get back to Division 1 with a draw away to Division 3 champions Cavan this afternoon.

Diane O’Hora’s side, in their first game under the two-time All-Star, were left chasing the game for most of the first half, conceding a goal in the opening five minutes from Cavan’s captain Aishling Sheridan. It set the tone for the hosts, who were positive going forward, but Mayo did manage to cut the gap to three points with the last kick of the half, a superb strike by Ballyhaunis’ Erin Murray.

Mayo were within touching distance of Cavan for most of the second half, cutting the gap to a point but struggling to level matters. They finally shot out in front with 10 minutes to play when Sinead Cafferkey played a ball over the top of the defence, collected by Sinead Walsh and buried in the net to put Mayo in front for the first time in the game.

It looked as though Mayo would hold on for the win when Walsh fired them back in front in the 58th minute but a mix-up at the back allowed Sheridan to find an equaliser leaving the two sides with a share of the spoils at full-time.

Next up for Mayo is Wexford at home.
