Mayo Gaels B claimed the Mayo SFL Division 4 title after a dramatic extra-time win over Kiltane B in MacHale Park this afternoon.
The Barony men will be kicking themselves, with poor discipline costing them dearly in the second half. As well as losing Anthony Coyle and Johnny Ginty to red cards, Kiltane were also caught twice for failing to keep three players inside the Gaels half, the second time seeing Peter Gallagher take the game to extra time with a two-point free.
Kiltane did nudge ahead early in the first period of extra time, but tired legs began to catch up with them as two goals from substitute Padraig Jennings put Gaels into the lead before running away 12-point winners in the end.
Goals from Rory Ginty and Micky Ginnelly were the difference for Kiltane in the first half as they led 2-4 to 0-6. Gaels could have reduced the margin further but were guilty of seeing too many point attempts go wide of the post.
A Kiltane goal from Johnny Deane saw them stretch their lead to seven two minutes into the second half but it would be their last score for 26 minutes. Five Peter Gallagher points and one from Phelim Prendergast saw Gaels leave the bare minimum between them while Kiltane were reduced to 14 after the dismissal of Anthony Coyle.
Johnny Ginty stopped the rot for Kiltane on 58 minutes and Shane Gallagher’s two point free looked to have won it for them, but Peter Gallagher stepped up with a pair of two-point efforts to force extra-time.
Peter Gallagher put Gaels back in front for the first time since the end of the first half early in the first period of extra-time but Kiltane struck back with an Owen Doherty two-pointer and a goal from Pat Deane on 66 minutes. But Gaels would score two goals in two minutes, both coming from Padraig Jennings, to go in front and further points from Andrew Quinn, David Quinn, Ryan Connolly, Phelim Prendergast and Ryan McGurrin ended Kiltane resistance, with Gaels putting further gloss on the scoreline thanks to a goal from Andrew Quinn late on.
