Limerick GAA honorary president and long-time sponsor JP McManus, his wife Noreen and their family are to donate €1 million to each county.
first reported this morning that Mr McManus will follow up on his previous gesture of 2018 when he donated €100,000 to all 32 counties soon after Limerick ended a 45-year wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup.
The money is to be divided equally between clubs in the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association.
In his letter to clubs, Mr McManus, through the JP McManus Charitable Foundation, who is the official sponsor of Limerick GAA, stated: “My family and I greatly value the spirit and meaning of community and our GAA, Camogie and Ladies Gaelic Football Clubs, who are at the heart of communities right throughout the island.”
Mayo Fine Gael TD welcomed the gesture from Mr McManus.
“This is an extraordinarily generous donation which follows on from his donation of €3.2m in 2018. At that stage, he donated €100,000 to each of the 32 counties.
“Mayo GAA are set to receive an extraordinary donation of €1m, which will be a significant boost and is to be evenly divided and distributed to clubs across GAA, Camogie and Ladies Gaelic Football in the county.
“This latest gift to our GAA clubs is ten times what they received five years ago. This is a fantastic gesture from a man who has always been a huge supporter of our games. This funding will help counties to invest in the development of the games, improve facilities and assist teams in reaching the next levels.
“I would like to thank JP, Noreen and all the McManus family for this exceptional donation and for his unwavering commitment to the success of the GAA.”
The GAA thanked the McManus family in a statement this afternoon.
Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy and Ard Stiúrthóir CLG Tom Ryan said: “We would like to place on record our sincere gratitude to JP McManus and his family for yet another remarkable gesture of support.
"Clubs across the island benefitted greatly from the generosity of JP and his family in 2018, and we know that the funds were put to very good use at the time.
"His support of the GAA at many levels is well documented and our units will once again rejoice in the generosity of the McManus family and use the funds to assist in their hugely important work at the heart of communities.”
The LGFA has acknowledged the extremely kind donation from Mr McManus.
They say this money will be used equally in support of the men's and women's codes in each county and comes at an important time for clubs, when costs are increasing significantly.
“We thank JP McManus, his wife, Noreen, and their family for an extremely generous donation which will come as a huge boost to our clubs as they plan for 2024,” a spokesperson from the LGFA said. "This money will be put to good use and will help the ongoing development of our many clubs across the country.
Commenting, LGFA President, Mícheál Naughton, said: “We wish to put on the record, as an Association, our sincere thanks to JP McManus, Noreen, and family for this incredible gesture.
“We all know how much JP loves Gaelic Games and this money will provide invaluable support to clubs at grassroots levels across the country.
“JP previously assisted county boards in 2018 with a very generous donation and, once again, his efforts are hugely appreciated.”
