Flynn rewarded with first All-Star nomination

Jordan Flynn is one of two Mayo players shortlisted to receive PwC All-Star football awards.
Crossmolina’s Jordan Flynn and Ballintubber’s Diarmuid O’Connor are among the 45 names nominated for this year’s PwC All-Star football nominations.
Picking up his first All-Star nomination, Flynn’s stock continues to rise and he has become an ever-present in Mayo’s starting lineup since Kevin McStay’s appointment as Mayo senior manager last year. During the National League, he started every game and played almost every minute of Mayo’s Division 1 success, only being subbed off in the game against Roscommon.
That trend continued through the championship, playing near every minute again with late substitutions against Roscommon in the Connacht quarter-final and Louth in the All-Ireland qualifiers.
O’Connor, who was crowned the GAA/GPA Young Footballer of the Year in 2015 and 2016, picks up his first All-Star nomination since 2016, and third overall. Now one of the veterans of the Mayo squad, he continues to be a mainstay of the Green and Red, only missing the Armagh game in the National League and the championship match against Louth due to injury.
Elsewhere in Connacht, Galway and Roscommon both have two nominees each with Seán Kelly and Damien Comer being nominated for the Tribesmen while Brian Stack and Enda Smith have been nominated for the Rossies. Roscommon goalkeeper Conor Carroll has been nominated for PwC GAA/GPA Young Footballer of the Year.
All-Ireland football champions Dublin have been rewarded with 10 nominations. The high-profile list of 45 names is notable for being spread across 13 counties – the largest representative breakdown since 2008.
Also announced are the contenders for PwC GAA/GPA Footballer of the Year – an accolade voted for by the inter-county playing population. Last year’s winner, David Clifford is again shortlisted, and the Kerry star forward is joined by Dublin midfielder and a two-time Player of the Year Brian Fenton, as well as Slaughtneil dual star Brendan Rogers from Derry.
The candidates for PwC GAA/GPA Young Footballer of the Year are Derry duo Ethan Doherty and Eoin McEvoy and the aforementioned Roscommon ‘keeper Carroll – young players who caught the eye with their performances last summer.
The PwC All-Stars nominees and winners are chosen by a panel of Gaelic Games correspondents from across, print, radio, tv and digital media, in a meeting chaired by Uachtarán CLG. The PwC All-Star teams will be presented with their awards at a gala black-tie event which will be staged in Dublin’s RDS and shown live on RTÉ television on Friday, November 17. The football winners and the overall Players of the Year will be announced live on the night.
